King The Land Review: Lee Junho and YoonA bring annoyance to lovers trope in this cutesy and light-hearted romantic comedy

en Bollywood News King The Land Review: Lee Junho and YoonA bring annoyance to lovers trope in this cutesy and light-hearted romantic comedy

The drama premiered on June 17, 2023 on JTBC and globally on Netflix.

Being in the customer service industry is definitely not a cake walk but many of us aspire to make the hospitality even more refined and comfortable for each and every consumer. Be it a flight attendant, or a hotel manager or even a store manager, the challenges that come each day are unique and test one’s mental and physical endurance. Those of us who work in these fields very well know what goes on inside out. Those of us who are on the other side of the line, can watch King the Land starring Girls’ Generation’s YoonA and 2PM’s Lee Junho. In this drama, we see her as a concierge at the King Hotel and Junho as the head of the same hotel. The drama tells the story of how these two individuals meet, fall in love and overcome obstacles in their personal and professional lives.

King The Land Review: Lee Junho and YoonA bring annoyance to lovers trope in this cutesy and light-hearted romantic comedy

Cheon Sa Rang is a hard-working woman who aspires to become the best employee at the King Hotel. She does not have the required degree for the job, but is hired mostly because ‘she has a good smile’. When she was young, she had visited the King Hotel with her mother and was enraptured in the aura of space. She worked towards her dream to work at King Hotel and after a few years of joining, she achieved her goal. Gu Won is a chaebol heir who is at constant cross hairs with his step sister. He is not on good terms with his father either. He absolutely hates the fake smiles that the customer service attendants put on when dealing with any customer. In the episode we also see that he harbors a trauma against such smiles which materialize into evil ones in his nightmares. He and his secretary share a deeper and honest bond than he does with his sister or his father.

Sa Rang and Won cross paths at the hotel after Sa Rang joins the hotel and is appointed to cleaning duties at the gym. They start off on the wrong foot because of a misunderstanding. While Sa Rang is working her way up at King Hotel, Gu Won is overseas completing his education. Now, years later they cross paths again. This time as an employee and a boss. They bicker and banter whenever they meet, but are forced to work together for the hotel’s benefit. Where Sa Rang is effusive and optimistic, Won is grumpy and pessimist. The two are opposites in their work ethics as well. But as the two soon start to spend time together, there seems to be a change in their demeanor towards each other. There seems to be no previous connection between the two apart from the initial misunderstanding. But this is K-dramaland and you never know! Perhaps, they might have crossed paths during their childhood when Sa Rang first visited the hotel with her mother.

King The Land is a great drama choice if you are looking for something light and breezy to watch over the weekend. The chemistry between the leads does not seem forced, but the predictability of the story does take the excitement of ‘will-they-won’t-they-date’ element. There is humor laced to almost every scene which helps to elevate the tension that the characters face. The drama also goes to show how the female lead, Sa Rang, and her two friends who also work in hospitality, face each and every type of consumer and how they put in their blood, sweat, tears and wit to get through the situations. They have each other’s backs when it comes to dealing with personal life and they are equally supportive of their colleagues at work. Not only them, but the rest of the supporting cast also does a good job at showcasing how the corporate world works, even when it comes to serving customers. There are all types of people that you will meet when you are working in an industry that requires you to be on your toes 24/7.

Each scene in the drama is more vibrant than the previous one. It employs the classic elements of a breezy romcom - slow motion entrances, leads daydreaming when they see the other person, slightly exaggerated situations to induce humor and of course the male lead whose cold exterior will be melted down by the sunshine energy of the female lead. With just over an hour of runtime, the episodes pack in a lot of the story and provide adequate space for the secondary plots to unravel as well. King The Land is a cliched and light-hearted drama that you can watch while lounging on a sofa and eating chips or sitting on a poolside and sipping margaritas. What do you think of annoyance to lovers trope rom-com story?
