Actor-singer-songwriter-producer and a member of GOT7, the multi-faceted Jinyoung's voice is undoubtedly one of the most soothing voices out there. The artist has been around for ten years in the entertainment industry juggling work between acting and music for as far as fans can remember. And, there is no stopping him. The musician dropped his first solo album and it is just what one would expect from Jinyoung. The five-track EP is titled Chapter 0: WITH and was released on January 18, 2023. The only minus point about this debut album is the fact that the 6 tracks aren't enough - it needs to be more!
The album is led by the heart-wrenching number ‘Animal’ which is a tale of loss and heartbreak. The song is punctuated with sombre piano tunes which elevate the remorse the protagonist is going through. The violin notes weave their way through as Jinyoung sings ‘I'm the one who didn't let you near the sharpness/In the loneliness and desolation/Who am I to live?/Where am I going?’.
The next track is a pop romance number, 'Cotton Candy'. After having expressed regret and remorse, Jinyoung moves on to expressing love. Jinyoung vocals are like butter on hot toast. The song has your attention from the moment it begins. The retro jazz instrumental paired with reverbs in the chorus whip up a delectable track. The candied lyrics, ‘The sweetness of thе moment makes me promise tomorrow / I feel like I can't escape’ can make anyone fall in love instantly. Jinyoung takes the divine emotions of love and drizzles them with a delectable caramel syrup of his singing.

Next comes 'Our Miracle' which is a praise for a lover and the growing feelings of love. The song is a smooth track with stripped synth beats. Jinyoung employs his vocals in a husky tone as he sings, ‘Dropped into a glass of clear water/ The colour of you and me/It spreads and naturally becomes one/Becomes a rainbow’. If 'Cotton Candy' was a fun youthful number, then 'Our Miracle' is an evolved and blossomed take on the emotions of affection and love.
Following this, the track 'Sleep Well' is a song of hope, strength and immense love that the protagonist harbours for their lover. Asking someone how they have been and how their day has been being one of the most genuine questions to ask. It might seem simple on the surface but it carries with it a slew of hidden emotions. ‘Sleep Well’ is a ballad which feels straight out of an emotional montage in a romance movie. Jinyoung vocalizes a few phrases in the song which add to its cinematic feel. The electric guitar riffs are spread out evenly throughout the song to heighten the feel. There is sincerity in the song when Jinyoung croons, ‘You who are my everything / You who are my destiny / My eternal love / Do not cry.’
Jinyoung’s Chapter 0: WITH concludes with the ballad ‘Letter’. The song features a stellar orchestral score as Jinyoung sings ‘Even after time passes/I hope we can always smile when we look at each other/In our undecided future/Is it my greed to wish that there is no night inside?’ The percussion beats accentuate each word sung in the first half and in the second half the string instruments take over. ‘Letter’ is a letter of farewell, a bittersweet ending to a love that once bloomed to its prime. It carries with it the remorse of a breakup and the hope of a new beginning.

For a debut album, Jinyoung does a tremendous job with the over-arching themes of love. Exploring the different facets of relationships, he dives into his emotions and expresses deep emotions. His strength lies in his voice and lyrical prowess and this tale of love Chapter 0: WITH depicts his artistic capabilities. There have been many songs about love, romance and heartbreak but Jinyoung taps into everyday seemingly common gestures that one often overlooks. By doing so, he not only goes deep into understanding the emotion, but he also manages to paint it in an opulent way. Jinyoung stuck to using the string instruments and percussions the most to exalt the message he intends to share. That worked out in his favour greatly indeed. The album Chapter 0: WITH is a warm hug to whoever is experiencing love in different forms. With this debut solo album, Jinyoung yet again sets a benchmark for himself.
