The psychological thriller Holland continues to intrigue audiences, not only for its gripping mystery but also for the dynamic relationships at its core. One of the most fascinating connections in the film is between Nancy Vandergroot, played by Nicole Kidman, and Dave, portrayed by Gael García Bernal. Their on-screen chemistry brings an added layer of depth to the unfolding suspense.
García describes Dave as a man struggling with loneliness and a sense of disconnection at the beginning of the film. His character is drawn to Nancy in a way that feels both natural and inevitable. "Yeah. I mean, there's something mysterious and mesmerizing, and at the same time, sort of immediate trust and simplicity. And you see Dave at the beginning a little bit lonely. You know, the worst connotation of the word, you know, like not being able to connect with anybody. And Nancy seems to be the only person that looks at him. And then looks into him in a way. So, there is that immediate connection. And then one thing follows the next and yeah. [laugh]," Bernal explains.
Nancy, a woman who begins to suspect that her life isn’t as perfect as it seems, finds an unexpected ally in Dave. As she unravels the secrets lurking beneath her seemingly idyllic suburban life in Holland, Michigan, Dave becomes entangled in her search for the truth. Their relationship is a crucial element of the story, adding emotional weight to the mystery at the heart of the film.
Set against the visually stunning yet subtly unsettling backdrop of Holland, Michigan, Holland explores themes of perception, trust, and hidden truths. Director Mimi Cave has praised the setting for its ability to blend a sense of nostalgia with an undercurrent of unease, making it the perfect place for the story to unfold.
The film, which premiered at the 2025 South by Southwest Festival on March 9, is set for release on Amazon Prime Video on March 27, 2025.
