More than half a year has passed, and as we get closer to the next quarter of 2023, K-dramaland seems to keep getting interesting. July saw the rise of dramas like Revenant, See You in My 19th Life and King the Land. As these dramas come to a conclusion and make way for the new ones, August seems to hold promise in regards to fresh pairings, new stories and a sprinkle of variety of genres. EXO’s SUHO returns to acting with Behind Your Touch which stars Han Ji Min and Lee Min Ki in the lead. SF9’s Rowoon makes a comeback too, with Destined With You. August also sees an increase in webtoon-adapted K-dramas with Mask Girl, My Dearest and Moving. Let’s take a closer look at the upcoming K-dramas releasing in the month of August 2023.

If you were looking to indulge in some historical dramas, then look no further. My Dearest is a historical romance drama starring Nam Goong Min and Ahn Eun Ji in the lead. The drama tells a story set during the Qing invasion in the Joseon era. Nam Goong Min plays the role of a secret operative and Eun Ji plays the role of a woman whose family suffers during the war. The two cross paths and eventually fall in love. My Dearest is set to release on August 4.

Did you wait for a good sci-fi superhero story in K-dramaland? Your wait might just come to an end with Moving. This K-drama is based on a webtoon of the same name which tells the story of a bunch of young students who inherited superpowers from their parents. The show stars Lee Jung Ha, Hang Hyo Joo, Kim Do Hoon and Go Youn Jung in the lead. The story gets more thrilling as the trio has to keep their abilities a secret. Moving premieres on Disney+ Hotstar on August 9.

Park Hae Jin had been missing from the K-dramas for a short while. But now he is back as a daring new detective in the upcoming K-drama The Killing Vote as Park Moo Chan. He stars alongside Lim Ji Yeon. The two are paired up and assigned to take down “Dog Mask”, a vigilante who kills criminals by deciding votes taken on country-wide polls. Park Sung Woong also stars in a pivotal role. The Killing Vote is also adapted from a webtoon. The show will premiere on August 10.

Ra Mi Ran delivered a stunning performance with Good Bad Mother earlier this year. Now she returns as Go Hae Ra, a middle-aged woman who joins as an intern at a firm, despite her past experience. As the new intern, she is offered an unusual deal by her former colleague and now-boss. This workplace comedy drama premieres on August 11.

Lee Min Ki and Han Mi Jin, both actors have their unique abilities to draw the viewer’s attention towards them with each and any role they take up. They have now paired up for the drama Behind Your Touch. Han Ji Min appears as Bong Ye Boon who has psychometric abilities and Lee Min Ki is Moon Jang Yeol, a detective who joins hands with her to solve crimes. EXO’s Suho also plays a pivotal role in the show. The show’s plot might chime with that of He is Psychometric starring GOT7’s Jinyoung, so it remains to be seen how Behind Your Touch differentiates itself. This K-drama will begin airing from August 12 on Netflix.

August seems to be a month of webtoon and comic adaptations. Mask Girl is yet another name in the list of adapted comics premiering in August 2023. The story is a comedy about an office worker named Kim Mo Mi (played by Ko Hyun Jung) who doubles up as a masked radio jockey at night. Ahn Jae HOng stars as Joo Oh Nam, Mi Mo’s colleague who has a crush on her and is also a fan of Mask Girl. Their lives soon spiral out of control as the identity of Mask Girl is revealed. This drama will premiere on August 18 on Netflix.

Former I.O.I member Kim So Hye stars as Lee Kwon Sook, a boxing prodigy who disappears moments before one of the biggest competitions of her career. She restarts her life as a pre-school teacher when she is met with Kim Tae Young (played by Lee Sang Yeob), a sports agent. He is close with Kim Hee Won, a baseball player and in order to help her, he aims to get Kwon Sook back in the boxing ring. This sports drama is set to premiere on August 21.

SF9’s Rowoon is back to the silver screen and this time in a new fantasy drama! He stars as Jang Shin Yu, who suffers from a mysterious health condition. His family is said to have been cursed. That tale goes back 300 years and leads to a mysterious book. Paired opposite Rowoon is Jo Bo Ah as Lee Hong Jo, a civil servant. She lands in possession of a box containing the same book. They join forces to unravel the mystery behind the curse and break the curse. The drama is set to premiere on August 23.
