EXCLUSIVE: Rachel Brosnahan talks about teaming up with Rami Malek in The Amateur: “We thought it would be a fun way to finally get on screen together”

Rachel Brosnahan, known for her acclaimed role in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, stars alongside Rami Malek in the gripping action-thriller The Amateur. The film, directed by James Hawes, marks a significant departure from Brosnahan’s previous work and dives into a world of espionage, grief, and vengeance.

In The Amateur, Malek plays a cryptographer for the CIA who is devastated after his wife is killed in a terrorist attack. Denied permission to pursue justice through official channels, he takes matters into his own hands—despite having no training in espionage. “This is about a man who is not a trained spy or assassin,” Brosnahan explains, “but is a really smart guy who loses his wife in this horrible way, and ultimately does things that you would never, and he would never, dream himself capable of to avenge her death.”

Brosnahan, who plays a key role in the film, shares that collaborating with Malek had long been on their radar. “Rami and I have talked loosely about doing something together,” she recalls. “And we thought it would be a fun way to finally get on screen together.”

The movie explores not only physical action but also psychological transformation, as Malek’s character taps into rage and resolve to survive. For Brosnahan, the emotionally driven narrative was a strong draw. “It’s not just an action film,” she notes, “it’s about loss, resilience, and the unexpected strength that can come from pain.”

The Amateur brings a grounded approach to the spy genre, focusing more on heart and human instinct than gadgets and training. With Brosnahan and Malek at the helm, it promises a compelling mix of emotion and adrenaline.
