As the countdown begins for the March 6 theatrical release of The Bride, actor Peter Sarsgaard is offering a bleak, fascinating glimpse into the psyche of the man tasked with restoring order. Sarsgaard stars as Detective Jake Wiles, the "smooth-talking" investigator who finds himself on the tail of an outlaw couple leaving a trail of carnage in their wake. However, don't expect a hard-boiled hero at the top of his game.
In a conversation about the role, Sarsgaard revealed that Wiles is a man drifting through the twilight of a disillusioned career. "Detective Wiles is the lead detective on the case," Sarsgaard explains. "He’s tracking these two monsters. And I think when we first encounter him, he’s somebody who’s pretty jaded, has kind of lost the plot in terms of his work and what might at first have motivated him to do his work."
This existential fatigue creates a unique power dynamic within the investigation, particularly regarding his partnership with Myrna, played by Academy Award winner Penélope Cruz. While Wiles holds the title, Sarsgaard suggests that the engine of the operation sits firmly with his "Girl Friday."
"She’s the one who’s really leading things," says Sarsgaard. "I think he’s someone who’s questioning what he’s doing, what he’s about in his own life. When it comes to the working relationship between Wiles and Myrna, Wiles eats and Myrna works. She’s full of energy and full of enthusiasm about the work. And I think he appreciates that."
The relationship isn't one of traditional mentorship or competition; rather, it's a symbiotic arrangement born of Wiles' own detachment. By stepping back, he grants Myrna a level of agency that defies the typical police hierarchy of the era.
"I think for her, he’s somebody who gives her more freedom than probably other bosses would give. And he hopes she appreciates him," Sarsgaard notes. The disparity in their drive is palpable: "She always seems like she’s two steps ahead of Wiles. And Wiles isn’t trying to keep up. He really should retire."
As The Bride! prepares to haunt cinemas this Friday, audiences will see if Wiles’ hands-off approach and Myrna’s relentless pursuit are enough to corner the "monsters" on the lam, or if the detective’s apathy will be their undoing.
