Ahead of his India tour, Bryan Adams spoke to Bollywood Hungama about his music, what can one expect from his tour and more.
Q. This will be your sixth visit to India. How does it feel to return to a country that has such a long-standing connection with your music?
Bryan Adams: We’re thrilled to be coming back, I often recount the story of playing Bombay/Mumbai in 93 at the cricket stadium, it was absolutely wild. I wish I’d filmed it.
Q. You’ve performed in India multiple times over the years. How have your experiences changed between the tours? Any notable memories from your previous concerts here?
Bryan Adams: Each time we come we have new experiences; I remember on the first trip driving into Mumbai and the road was blocked by an elephant that had decided to go to sleep in the middle of the road. That kind of thing just doesn’t happen in Canada.
Q. How did you craft the setlist for the So Happy It Hurts tour? Were there any specific songs you felt had to be included for your Indian shows? Any surprises?
Bryan Adams: The set list is all the songs you know and love and a few songs like ‘So Happy It Hurts’ and ‘Rock and Roll Hell’ the first single from my new label Bad Records.
Q. Your music has been the soundtrack to so many personal stories—love, heartbreak, celebration. How does it feel knowing that your songs have had such a deep impact on so many lives across generations?
Bryan Adams: It’s very humbling when you describe it that way. I got asked once by a Brazilian journalist if I knew how many kisses I’d been responsible for. It’s nice to think you’ve brought a little love into this hard world of wars.
Q. Are there any Indian musicians or bands you’ve come across whose work you admire or would like to collaborate with?
Bryan Adams: Really, the only ones I know are AR Rahman and the Shankar sitarists.
Q. Indian cinema and music have a unique global presence. Have you had the chance to explore any Indian movies or soundtracks, and is there anything that stood out to you?
Bryan Adams: It’s funny to be asked that because it’s not seen that much in Canada, yet I’m aware how massive it is here in India.
Q. India has such a rich cultural history. Is there a particular aspect of Indian culture, be it music, art, or cuisine, that resonates with you?
Bryan Adams: Yes, of course, yoga and the cuisine particularly.
Q. You’ve been in the music industry for over four decades, and yet you’re still constantly evolving as an artist. What keeps you motivated to continue making music and touring? What do you think has been the key to your songs resonating across generations?
Bryan Adams: I think the combination of always touring the world and always making new music. I’ve never really given it a rest.
Q. What’s a song of yours that you feel is underappreciated or one that you wish more people connected with you during your concerts?
Bryan Adams: There isn’t one in particular, but don’t worry, all of the songs in the set resonate or we wouldn’t play them!
Q. What has been the most significant change you’ve seen in the music especially when artists and labels opt for a trendier approach for virality on TikTok and Reels?
Bryan Adams: The good thing is that songs get discovered that you’d never expect, and some songs become momentary hits, I’m not sure however, if it’s developing artists. It all seems a bit like fast food
Q. Looking back on your illustrious career, what are some of the defining moments that have shaped you as an artist?
Bryan Adams: The top one is being able to pay my rent from making music. I’m forever grateful for that.
Q. What’s your pre-show routine like? How do you prepare yourself physically and mentally before hitting the stage?
Bryan Adams: Usually, I just put the kettle on and have a cup of tea. Not much more.
Q. With your 65th birthday around the corner, how do you envision the next phase of your career? Are there any new projects or collaborations on the horizon?
Bryan Adams: There’s a new album coming in 2025 called Roll with the Punches, and I’ve created a record label Bad Records to make music. Plus, I have a great studio in Canada called the Warehouse Studio. In fact, many Sikh rappers use that studio.
Q. You’ve been an influence on countless musicians. Who are some artists—whether in rock or other genres—that you admire or feel are carrying forward the spirit of music?
Bryan Adams: Without a doubt, Coldplay fits that bill.
Q. You’ve said that music is a celebration of life and connection. As you reflect on your legacy, what do you hope people will remember most about Bryan Adams the musician and person?
Bryan Adams: I love India and really look forward to coming back!
