Taking you back to the 1800s Regency era of London, Bridgerton traces the journey of multiple young men and women as they navigate their lives through love, romance, and relationships set amid the era of nobility. The British series has gained worldwide popularity with fans across the world eagerly anticipating the arrival of its seasons. The third season, which arrived recently, has left many a tad bit surprised considering that it has digressed from the actual series of novels written by Julia Quinn, on which the show is based on. Jess Brownell, the showrunner, discussed in an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama about the reason that prompted her to take this decision.
For the unversed, the original third book in the series is An Offer From a Gentleman, that focuses on the character of Benedict Bridgerton. However, Jess Brownell decided to adapt the storyline of the fourth novel Romancing Mr. Bridgerton that revolves around Colin Bridgerton (played by Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (played by Nicola Coughlan). Speaking about what prompted her decision, Jess told Bollywood Hungama, “Is calling me brave a way of saying 'you crazy girl' why did you have to switch it with the books?"
She went on to add, “After Shonda asked me to step into the showrunner role, the second conversation we had, I had gone away and reread the books, and we came back and talked about the order and we agreed mutually that Colin and Penelope have been in our screens now for two seasons. We have invested, we love them, and we also watched Colin not quite understand that Penelope has feelings for him. It just felt like the dynamics between them needs to change and this felt like the right time to tea up their season.” Fans of the show, who have been rooting for Colin and Penelope have already shared their excitement over the carriage scene where they saw the Bridgerton boy confess his feelings to Ms. Featherington.
While the first part of the third season is already streaming on Netflix, the second part of this season will be premiering on June 13.
