Director Jon M. Chu unveiled first look at Ariana Grande's Glinda and Cynthia Erivo's Elphaba in Wicked film adaptation

Director Jon M. Chu has finally unveiled the first look at Ariana Grande's Glinda and Cynthia Erivo's Elphaba in film adaptation of Wicked. Chu took to Instagram to share first look of Grande’s Glinda and Erivo’s Elphaba. “You weren’t told the whole story. What happens when you veer off the Yellow Brick Road? FIRST LOOK of the #WickedMovie … currently in production in Oz,” he captioned the post.

In the newly dropped first look images, Erivo can be seen sporting the signature witch hat and broom, while a Grande is donning a striking pink gown as she ascends a staircase.

Wicked is a prequel to The Wizard of Oz. The movie musical also stars Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible and Ethan Slater as Boq. The original production of Wicked premiered in 2003 with lead stars Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth.

As Variety notes, Wicked recounts everything that happened before Dorothy sauntered down that iconic yellow brick road — and tells the story of the unlikely friendship between Elphaba, who later becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, known as the Good Witch. It also reveals how the Wicked Witch got that pointy hat.

Originally based on Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, Wicked has been one of the most popular musicals in the U.S. since premiering on Broadway in 2003. Stephen Schwartz, who wrote the music and lyrics to the Broadway show, is adapting the screenplay with Winnie Holzman.

The first Wicked arrives in theaters on November 27, 2024 with a sequel set for December 25, 2025 release.
