Renowned as one of the most stunning Korean stars, singer-actor Cha Eun Woo, celebrated for his compelling portrayals in dramas like My ID Is Gangnam Beauty, True Beauty and A Good Day to be a Dog, has been a K-pop star for 8 years with the group ASTRO. Often credited as songwriter and producer along with the singer, Cha has now taken the solo route. In his debut EP Entity, he showcases his versatility yet again. It is a poignant collection of five tracks, delve into themes of love, loss, heartache, and separation. The title track, Stay, accompanied by a visually captivating music video featuring India Eisley, captures the essence of longing and emotional vulnerability. Released on February 15, 2024, just after Valentine's Day, Entity marks Eun Woo's promising foray into solo music.
On Saturday, Cha impressed 3,500 fans at Jamsil Arena in Seoul's Songpa District with his performance as he played his solo music for the first time for the audience. Cha's solo concert, 2024 Just One 10 Minute Mystery Elevator, captivated the audience. Now, let’s take a look at the tracks and his EP.
1. U & I
Entity opens with a smooth jazzy track ‘U & I’. It expresses the hope of the protagonist to be reunited with their lover. There is a touch of nostalgia, a touch of lament over the past joy. There is a bittersweet hope that the lover would return – “Even if you get wet in the rain/I hope you come to find me/No words needed, slowly”.
2. F**CKING GREAT TIME
This one is a sensual song, despite the lingering message of separation reflected vividly in the lyrics – “Tell me that right here, right time/Let me do it likе this, like that/Know we gotta fucking great timе.”
3. STAY
‘Stay’ is a through-and-through cinematic track. It is sonically different from the rest of the tracks. Entity started off on softer notes but Cha Eun Woo switches to a bolder style with this track. The guitar strums at the beginning of the track continue alliterating the emotion throughout the song. It showcases his ability as a singer and that he can sing all genres with equal ease. The music video for ‘Stay’ also features India Eisley in a guest appearance. We find Cha Eun Woo in vast yet empty terrains trying to find answers and make the loved one stay – “When you miss someone once in a while/Just think of me/I'll live by you somehow/I want you to stay here.”
4. WHERE AM I
After ‘Stay’ comes 'Where Am I'. This track is an acoustic heavy ballad. In the previous track, there was an attempt to make a loved one stay, in this track we see that the lover has already left. Their departure has left a void in the protagonist’s life – “The sky I was going to see you in was clear/I hoped even the sun wouldn't rise/It all feels like lies, the time we spent together.”
‘You’re the Best’ is a good concluding track for the album. We see Cha Eun Woo tap into the softer melodies and emotions. This track chronicles the unsaid feelings and expresses admiration for their loved one – “It's the only one word, love/But I can't express to you.”
Cha Eun Woo's debut EP Entity showcases his evolution as a multifaceted artist. Through his music, acting, and overall image, he presents a more mature and versatile persona. Departing from his previous ‘soft boy' image, he embraces a sexier and bolder identity. This EP marks his transition into a soloist with a global appeal, capturing attention not just for his acting but also for his music. He has grown artistically, tapping into new dimensions of his talent. In essence, Cha Eun Woo's EP signifies a significant milestone in his career, demonstrating his versatility and ability to adapt to different roles within the entertainment industry.
