After the global success of A Business Proposal in 2022, director Park Seon Ho has returned with a fresh new story that promises to captivate audiences once again. Brewing Love, which premiered on November 4, 2024, introduces a refreshing twist on romance and personal growth, set against the backdrop of the brewing industry. Kim Se Jeong, who won hearts worldwide for her role as Shin Ha Ri in A Business Proposal, stars as Chae Yong Ju, a determined saleswoman with a hidden emotional depth. This time, she is paired opposite Lee Jong Won as Yoon Min Ju, a sensitive and empathetic brewmaster. Together, they bring a perfect blend of charm and chemistry to this heartwarming new drama.
Brewing Love tells the story of Chae Yong Ju former military personnel turned salesperson at a liquor company. When her branch faces the risk of shutting down, she is tasked with scouting Yoon Min Ju, an elusive master brewer. He lives in the countryside, operating in his small brewery away from the spotlight. He is an empath who catches up on people’s emotions faster than most others.
In the drama, we see that Yong Ju has her own set of struggles that she keeps hidden from the world. She lives with her ailing grandmother and works hard to provide a sustainable living. She is well-known among her colleagues for her dedication and street-smartness, often becoming the sole beacon of hope for all their work-related problems.
Yoon Min Ju is an introvert and does not indulge a lot of conversation. But he has a bunch of loyal employees around him who keep him on his toes. They share laughter, concern, and love for each other, showing the honest bond that is seen within the countryside communities. Min Ju has a complicated relationship with his father who was a former military general. In the past, Min Ju was often ridiculed by his father and his peers for being sensitive and emotional. They saw it as something that ‘men should not behave like.’
Yong Ju and Min Ju are not contrasting characters but rather complement each other’s personalities. Both share a similar ambition to follow their passion. Both understand everyone around them better, Min Ju more than Yong Ju but they both care for those around them. But despite that, they choose not the showcase how they truly feel. They keep their pain to themselves. What will be interesting to see is when they begin to develop feelings and choose to be vulnerable around each other. Both of them have learned to hide their feelings from the world, but each has the power to make the other comfortable enough and truly understand each other.
The pacing of Brewing Love is deliberately slow, much like the process of brewing a perfect beer—one that requires time and care to reach its full potential. While the eventual outcome of the story may be predictable, what makes the journey compelling is the way the makers craft each step of the narrative, building toward a satisfying and heartfelt conclusion.
Visually, the cinematography is a treat for the eyes, with the serene countryside setting enhancing the emotional depth of the story. The show also offers a fascinating glimpse into the intricate journey of beer, from farm to can, showcasing the artistry and precision involved in creating that perfect, refreshing experience.
As for the lead pair, the chemistry between Kim Se Jeong’s Chae Yong Ju and Lee Jong Won’s Yoon Min Ju is just beginning to unfold. Their dynamic promises an engaging blend of playful banter, misunderstandings, and mutual growth, making the ride ahead one filled with delightful tiffs and tender moments.
The supporting cast shines in their roles, adding the right mix of humor and emotion to elevate the storyline. Shin Do Hyun delivers a standout performance as Bang A Reum, a pivotal character who plays a crucial role in the unfolding drama, while Baek Sung Chul brings depth and complexity to O Chan Hwi.
These days we are seeing a rise in K-dramas that address the parent-child discord, giving the audience a space to feel welcomed and understood. The dramas are also presenting us characters that are more realistic than dreamy. Especially with male characters that are no longer just authoritarian but are more perceptive, sensitive, open, and accepting of change. Yun Min Ju is different from the roster of most male leads we see in K-dramas. He is sensitive and is not shy about it. His character is in stark contrast to the patriarchal idea of what a man should be.
With Brewing Love, director Park Seon Ho brings to brew a tale of love and life that is like no other. The audience will find something to take away from the drama as the characters begin to process their feelings and find solace in each other.
