en Bollywood News BOYNEXTDOOR deliver a sonic celebration and playfulness of teenage years just before adulthood in third EP ’19.19’ – Album Review

The K–pop boy group under KOZ Entertainment, a subsidiary of HYBE Labels, also unveiled the title track ‘Nice Guy’ on September 9.

South Korea's rising boy group, BoyNextDoor (SUNGHO, RIWOO, JAEHYUN, TAESAN, LEEHAN and WOONHAK), has returned with their third EP, 19.99 on September 9, 2024. This seven-track album marks a significant milestone in their musical journey, capturing the youthful energy and uncertainties that accompany the transition from adolescence to adulthood. The EP's title symbolizes the limbo between two decades, a time of both excitement and trepidation. The group's members, who are either newly in their twenties or on the verge of turning 20, bring authenticity to their music by exploring the complexities of this transitional phase. The lead single, ‘Nice Guy’, is a catchy pop track that showcases the group's confidence and optimism. With its infectious melody and upbeat rhythm, the song conveys a message of self-belief and the power of positive thinking. The accompanying music video playfully depicts the group's experiences with part-time jobs, highlighting the challenges and awkward moments that young adults often face.

Joined by executive producer ZICO and main producer Pop Time, the uplifting track exemplifies a masterful blend of musical sophistication and wide-ranging appeal. The track also serves as a testament to the sextet’s self-producing prowess, with JAEHYUN, TAESAN, and WOONHAK participating in writing the lyrics, and TAESAN and WOONHAK also contributing to the composition. The result is a universally engaging sound that captivates listeners from the get-go.

Beyond the lead single, the EP offers a diverse range of tracks that delve into various aspects of the coming-of-age experience. ‘Dangerous’ explores the thrill and exhilaration of taking risks, while ‘Gonna Be A Rock’ expresses a determination to overcome obstacles and succeed. The album also includes introspective tracks like ‘20’ and ‘Call Me,’ which reflect on personal growth and the complexities of relationships. One of the standout features of 19.99 is the group's involvement in the production process.

1. DANGEROUS

‘Dangerous’ is a pre-release track by BoyNextDoor. The inclusion of a dialogue-like narration in the song gives a good edge to the storytelling. ‘Dangerous’ is all about indulging in the danger of breaking rules set by one’s parents and embracing frivolous activities head-on.

2. GONNA BE A ROCK

Gonna Be A Rock’ is a classic heartbreak pop track about a young person whose emotions have still not peaked maturity. There is a fun and borderline humorous element to the lyrics as the boys’ croon to the melody.

3. SKIT

BoyNextDoor channeled their seniors’ style by incorporating a skit in the EP. This SKIT comes almost in the middle of the album to serve as a break from the idea of laziness and bratty behavior underlined by anxiety about the upcoming change.

4. NICE GUY

Nice Guy’ is a song about a nice and popular guy but these days is feeling a little tired from all the excursions. The song has an upbeat tone to it which makes it fun to listen to from start to finish. There is also an underscore of romantic confession in the song.

5. 20

BoyNextDoor’s ‘20’ is a song that most of us would relate to, regardless of our age. It also serves as a nostalgic reminder of our own 20s when we were standing on the verge of change. Some of us shifted cities, or countries even, and that itself shifts perspective on life and everything that comes later. One might find others of their age living their best life but at the same time feel like they are not doing anything.

6. CALL ME

The album concludes with ‘Call Me’, a track that sends out a message of solace to the listeners. To anyone standing on the brink of change, this song will serve as a beacon of hope that it is okay not to be okay and that it is okay to feel the nervousness.

BoyNextDoor’s idea of music and themes could remind one of Tomorrow X Together’s (TXT) early days where they wondered what it would be like to grow up and embrace adulthood. While TXT’s music had a darker edge, BoyNextDoor’s music is more upbeat and carries an optimistic tone despite the underlying notion of worry and anxiety. This comeback promises a new wave of music and perspective on the boy’s understanding of all things life and lemon.
