Warner Bros. brought Middle-earth to the spotlight during its presentation at CinemaCon 2026 by unveiling key cast members of the upcoming fantasy feature The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The studio confirmed that the film will be released in theatres on December 17, 2027.
Directed by and starring Andy Serkis as Gollum and Sméagol, the film will explore events that take place in the years leading up to The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, focusing on the search for the corrupted Hobbit.
Several actors from the original trilogy are set to return to their characters. Ian McKellen reprises his role as Gandalf, while Elijah Wood returns as Frodo Baggins. Lee Pace is also back as Thranduil. The casting announcement also introduced new additions to the franchise. Kate Winslet will play Marigol, and Leo Woodall joins as Halvard. Jamie Dornan has been cast as Strider, the identity later revealed to be Aragorn in J. R. R. Tolkien’s original novel.
Story set before events of The Fellowship of the Ring
The film will chronicle the hunt for Gollum during the period preceding the events of The Fellowship of the Ring. The screenplay adapts Tolkien’s source material and is written by returning collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, along with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. Tolkien first introduced readers to Middle-earth in The Hobbit in 1937 and later expanded the world through The Lord of the Rings trilogy in the 1950s.

Filmmaker Peter Jackson adapted The Lord of the Rings into three films released between 2001 and 2003. He later directed The Hobbit trilogy between 2012 and 2014. The original trilogy achieved major commercial and critical success, earning nearly $3 billion globally and winning 17 Academy Awards collectively. The final instalment, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, won Best Picture at the Academy Awards and secured a total of 11 Oscars.
Serkis’ portrayal of Gollum in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Return of the King marked a turning point for motion capture performance, supported by digital effects from Weta Workshop. He later reprised the role in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
Expanding Middle-earth across film and streaming platforms
Middle-earth storytelling has continued to expand in recent years. New Line Cinema returned to the franchise with the animated feature The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim in 2024. Meanwhile, Amazon MGM Studios is producing the streaming series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power for Amazon Prime Video, with its third season currently in development.
