Filmmakers Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti are stepping into a new phase of their creative journey with the launch of their production banner, Nocturna. Their maiden venture under the banner, They Will Kill You, sets the tone for what the duo hopes will be a distinctive and daring slate of films.
Reflecting on why this project became their first under Nocturna, Andy Muschietti explains, “It felt like the right first step. We wanted to come out of the gate with something that had impact and again, a movie that we would love to see anyhow. And so it was great for us to be able to actually help make it.” For the filmmaker, the decision was rooted as much in instinct as in ambition to begin with a story that resonated personally while also promising a strong cinematic punch.
Barbara Muschietti echoes that sentiment, placing emphasis on originality and tone. “And we wanted to make an original film, and the second we read the script, we knew that this was it. For us, there is no genre without humour at least a smidge. And this had a lot of humour, which we love because we grew up on this kind of tone. And it's a tone that it's almost not visited right now. And personally, as an audience member, I go to the movies to have a little holiday and I want to have fun and I want to leave the theatre with a smile on my face, even if there's blood drops on me! I still want to feel the excitement, and I want to feel happy, and this is something that THEY WILL KILL YOU will definitely give you.”
Her words underline a key creative philosophy behind Nocturna, blending genres while ensuring the audience experience remains entertaining and emotionally engaging.
Beyond its genre appeal, They Will Kill You also delves into deeper thematic territory. Andy Muschietti elaborates, “The themes are survival and family, the lengths you go to protect someone that you love, a parable about class warfare and disparity, and surviving that disparity, fighting against it, those are all themes that we found very attractive. This was something that is in the subtext, but I think it's important to talk about these stories in the shape of a spectacular action, horror, comedy adventure.”
Barbara adds a succinct but telling layer to this, stating, “And our heroes are the underdogs, which is what we always want to support.” The emphasis on underdog narratives aligns with the duo’s broader storytelling sensibilities stories that combine spectacle with emotional grounding.
Visually and tonally, the film promises a stylized and immersive world. Andy Muschietti offers insight into its aesthetic and creative collaborations, “The film is pretty stylized. You see that Kirill has his influences as a filmmaker that he wears on his sleeve, he puts them there for everyone to watch. But also, with a very specific and personal combination of tone and style in which humour is always a part of the mix. The Virgil is a terrifying environment. It's imposing, it's grim, it's rancid, it's tall. The dynamics and the connection between Kirill and our production designer, Jeremy Reed, were phenomenal. I think this bundle of action, horror, visual, sarcasm, and comedy and when I'm saying comedy, most of the time in this movie it is expressed as a visual sarcasm more than verbal jokes. It's more like this weird Grotesque slapstick that I'm also very attracted to.”
With They Will Kill You, the Muschiettis are clearly signalling their intent to carve out a space that thrives on tonal hybridity where horror meets humour, spectacle meets subtext, and entertainment remains paramount. As Nocturna takes its first step, the film stands as both a creative statement and a promise of what’s to come from the banner.
