The current team of guardians in Guardians of the Galaxy franchise get emotional and say goodbye to their roles as director James Gunn previously revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would be the last time fans will see the beloved team.

Speaking to Empire, Zoe Saldana, who plays Gamora in the franchise, spoke about filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and reprising her role as Gamora for the last time. "It's bittersweet; after all those years of complaining about that green make-up, I find myself already nostalgic about it," Zoe Saldana told the magazine. There's a lot of melancholy here, but also pride that we've achieved something great. James Gunn has written a beautiful story that's making us emotional even as we shoot it."

Last month, the film’s director James Gunn confirmed that the upcoming third installment in his trilogy will be the final one featuring the original team of Guardians. “This is the end for us, the last time people will see this team of Guardians.”

“I just want to be true to the characters, and I want to be true to the story and I want to give people the wrap-up that they deserve for the story,” he added. “So that is always a little bit scary; I'm doing my best.”

Speaking on Deadline's Hero Nation podcast, James Gunn also mentioned that the third Guardians film will surprise fans with a “dark” theme saying, “It’s big; it’s so, so big and dark, and different from what people might be expecting it to be.” he revealed. "I just want to be true to the characters, the story and give people the wrap-up that they deserve for the story. That's always a little bit scary; I'm doing my best." He added.

Introduced in 2014, the current Guardians team saw Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Dave Bautista as Drax The Destroyer, Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Zoe Saldana as Gamora and by the end of Avengers Endgame, the team also included Nebula played by Karen Gillan and Mantis by Pom Klementieff. The final chapter for James Gunn's intergalactic saga is scheduled for release on May 5, 2023.
