“We are not responsible for what you understand” – Riteish Deshmukh

Riteish Deshmukh is in an enviable space after five back to back successes. Comic timing is something that he has demonstrated ever since his Tujhe Meri Kasam days and now with Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya and Housefull 2 being his two consecutive successes this year, he is ready for a hat trick with Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum. Along with his partner-in-crime Tusshar Kapoor, he is all set to tickle audience's funny bone all over again in this adult comedy which has already raised eyebrows and led to quite a few queries. Even as the film is now playing on screens, Riteish gets candid in a way that only he can.

So Riteish, kitni hadhein paar kari gayi hai Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum mein?

Well, har insaan apni hadh khudh hi tai karta hai aur phir uss hisaab se paar bhi karta hai (smiles). What might be naughty and sexy for me might not be something that you would take in your stride. At our end we have only tried to make a naughty film with quite some humor, misunderstandings and confusion as the main ingredients. What you decipher and understand as an audience is entirely up to you; we are not responsible for that (smiles).

And yet again you have a joint responsibility with Tusshar Kapoor to deliver goods. So was it like starting from where you had left seven years ago? Or was it a matter of making a fresh start?

Of course this time around it was definitely better than the last time. From the very first scene when we came together, we understood each other and it was an easy ride from there onwards. We both have become very comfortable with the genre and it was not difficult at all to act and react. As I said, we were just having fun while sharing good camaraderie and keeping the core fact in mind that we had to be only responsible for what we said; beyond that its audience's call and not really dictated by us.

Well, some out there still want to hold your team responsible, what with the moral brigade up in arms. Moreover, while audience seems to be fine with such films, there is a segment of media that seems to have a bone to pick with such genre.

I have a different take towards this. I sincerely feel that everyone has a right to his or her opinion. I don't feel offended when people don't like a film; it's their choice after all. In any case films are meant to be subjective. I think as a filmmaker once you have created something and put that in front of the audience, you have to leave it to them to like it or not. A film is made for the public so it is but natural that they should decide whether it is good or bad. They have the right to review it critically and then make their judgment.

But then at times audiences do tend to get carried away by critical response, isn't it?

Yes, there is no denying the fact that a segment of audience may get influenced by critics and base their judgments on what they read or hear from them. But then there are also others who go by word of mouth and decide to watch a film entirely on their own. So at the end of the day there are both kind of audience and a filmmaker has to live with that. There is nothing to take offense.

Guess with the kind of humor in it, do you fear that Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum may seem a little offensive to some?

No, as long as you are the kind of audience that has reveled on films belonging to the genre of American Pie. This one is a light watch where you go, stay on with the characters, enjoy and have some laughs. This is the ride of boys; it is not a biopic or a thriller. Overall the humor quotient stays on to be really high here and believe me, what you have seen so far in the promos is just a highlight. The best jokes are reserved for the big screen!
