WAVES 2025: Kareena Kapoor reveals why Jab We Met is one film she wants the world to watch; says, “I believe it will continue to connect with people worldwide”

Jab We Met, starring Kareena Kapoor Khan and Shahid Kapoor, continues to be one of the most cherished films, capturing our hearts with its portrayal of romance and celebrating love in its purest form.

Even though years have passed since the film's release, the iconic characters of Kareena Kapoor’s Geet and Shahid Kapoor’s Aditya Kashyap continue to remain etched in the hearts and minds of Bollywood fans.

During a panel moderated by filmmaker Karan Johar at the ongoing WAVES 2025, Kareena discussed the enduring impact of Jab We Met and explained how the film beautifully captures the essence of a lively Punjabi girl.

She revealed the one film she would like the global audience to watch, saying, “I would say Jab We Met because somewhere it embodies the spirit of a young Indian girl, a young Punjabi girl, and every girl has this spark in her, that dream in her eyes. Also, the freedom to choose what she wanted…she has the right to… feel love, just as she wanted. I think it connected with everyone for a reason, and I believe it will continue to connect with people worldwide.”

The 2007 film, written and directed by Imtiaz Ali, tells the story of Aditya Kashyap (Shahid Kapoor), a heartbroken businessman who boards a train aimlessly after attending his ex-girlfriend's wedding. On the train, he encounters Geet Dhillon (Kareena Kapoor), a lively and impulsive girl who is planning to elope with her lover. As Aditya is drawn into her whirlwind life, he gradually falls in love with her, discovering a more joyful and adventurous way of living through her.

Geet was a bubbly, talkative, and free-spirited young woman, while Aditya was her complete opposite, quiet and reserved. The well-known saying "Opposites attract" perfectly fit their dynamic, adding depth to the plot. The film’s soundtrack was a major hit, with songs like ‘Ye Ishq Hai’, ‘Mauja Hi Mauja’, ‘Tum Se Hi’, and ‘Aaoge Jab Tum’ weaving their own magic. Over the years, Jab We Met has earned a cult status, beloved by audiences for its charm and unforgettable music.

Kareena also spoke about the possibility of working in Hollywood, saying, “I think it just organically did not happen. Films are my passion--they run in my veins. I was born into this family. Times are changing, and you never know. Chasing something has never been a part of my personality, but if it's meant to happen, maybe a Hindi-English film will come along. After all, even Spielberg is watching our movies!”
