Vijay Varma’s return to Goa for the premiere of his film Gustaakh Ishq at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) last year carried personal significance for the actor. Years ago, Goa was where he spent time immersing himself in cinema, often watching multiple films a day while living on a modest budget. Reflecting on those early days, Vijay recently shared in an interview with Goa Times, “We used to stay in rooms that cost Rs. 50 per night and watch around four films a day. This is where I learnt about cinema. Coming back to Goa for the premiere of my own film, Gustaakh Ishq, where I play the lead, truly feels like a full circle.”

Over the years, Vijay has built a reputation for taking on complex roles across films and series such as Darlings, Dahaad, and Kaalkoot. With Gustaakh Ishq, he explored a different space, playing Nawabuddin Saifuddin Rehman, a character rooted in romance and emotional openness. The film allowed him to step away from the darker or more conflicted roles he is often associated with, offering audiences a chance to see him in a comparatively lighter, more introspective narrative.

Speaking about the changing landscape of the industry, Vijay highlighted the role of streaming platforms in expanding creative possibilities. He described OTT as a “win-win situation for both viewers and makers,” noting that streaming has enabled stories to be told that might otherwise struggle to find backing due to budget constraints, subject matter, or the absence of established stars. According to him, this shift has also helped build audiences while creating opportunities for actors, writers, directors, and technicians.

Looking ahead, Vijay Varma has a busy slate with Matka King, directed by Nagraj Manjule, and an untitled project with Hansal Mehta. Both projects have drawn attention within the industry, adding to a body of work that continues to evolve across genres and formats.
