Few would dispute Vijay Sethupathi’s place among the finest contemporary actors in Indian cinema. Now, the versatile performer has broadened his creative horizons by starring in a silent film, Gandhi Talks.

With Gandhi Talks, Vijay makes a pointed statement about the excessive reliance on dialogue in Indian films. “Sir, we speak too much in our cinema,” he says candidly. “I am not talking about any one language. Cinema in every Indian language depends excessively on dialogue. We tend to over-explain everything. Whether this comes from insecurity about losing the audience’s attention or something else, I don’t know.”
For the actor, silence can be more powerful than a barrage of words. In Gandhi Talks, he explores the expressive possibilities of restraint. “Let the silences speak, as they do in Gandhi Talks. I enjoyed being silently articulate in this film. I would like to do more films where the spoken word is not over-emphasised,” Vijay says.
However, he acknowledges that the shift may not be easy in a culture deeply invested in punchy monologues and dramatic exchanges. “Sadly, our audience is addicted to dialogue-baazi,” he adds with a smile.
With this bold experiment, Vijay Sethupathi not only challenges conventional storytelling tropes but also sparks a wider conversation about how Indian cinema communicates emotion and whether less, at times, can truly be more.
