Renowned Bollywood filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra recently shared an anecdote from the making of his 2005 classic, Parineeta, that left audiences both amused and reflective. While speaking at the launch of the song ‘Chal Zero Pe Chalte Hain’ from his upcoming film Zero Se Restart, Chopra recounted an intense argument with lyricist Swanand Kirkire over changes to the song ‘Raat Hamari Toh.’

According to Chopra, Kirkire proposed altering certain words, such as “aitha” and “saanjh,” to more familiar terms like “shaam” to simplify the lyrics. “I was furious. He said no one would understand the original words, so I told him, ‘Bh****ke, tu mere terrace pe baithke isko simplify kar raha hai? Tu producer hai ki main producer hoon?’” Chopra exclaimed, adding, “Producer kaun hai bh*****od? My money will be wasted or yours if this doesn’t work?”

Swanand Kirkire’s Emotional Response

Chopra admitted that his outburst left Kirkire visibly upset, eventually bringing him to tears. The filmmaker revealed that he had to ask music director Shantanu Moitra to console Kirkire and assure him that the harsh words were not personal.

Reflecting on the incident, Chopra said, “I felt I was too harsh. But Swanand kept crying and said, ‘Sir, wherever I’ve gone in this city, people have always asked me to simplify the lyrics to sell the song. But you’re the first one who asked me to retain the original lyrics.’”

Zero Se Restart, set to release on December 13, offers a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s recent film 12th Fail, starring Vikrant Massey. The new film further explores Chopra’s dedication to authentic storytelling, a value that has defined his career.
