Rangi Saari and other songs in Dadra Bandish that influenced Bollywood
Kavita Seth’s ‘contemporary’ version of Rangi saari, a traditional dadra bandish in Raag Pahadi, that has become viral from the upcoming film Jugjugg Jeeyo. In its film version, its pace and arrangements have been adjusted as per the film’s needs and the music credited to Kavita and her son Kanishk as the crooning duo. The song is a traditional melody whose original composer and lyricist are unknown, the best-known versions are by Shobha Gurtu and Kaushiki Chakraborty. However, we did hear a film version just eight years ago in Gulaab Gang (2014), rendered by actress Madhuri Dixit-Nene, her mother Snehlata Dixit and Anupama Raag.

Speaking of traditional dadras being used in cinema with due modifications, Akhtari Jaan’s ‘Inhi logon ne’ was recorded in 1920 but a version featured in Pakeezah by Ghulam Mohammed, who passed away in 1968, in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar. Naushad also recorded ‘Mohe panghat pe Nandlal’ for the 1960 Mughal-E-Azam, also with Lata. This song was found at least in two older records, one of which was sung by the famous Indubala Devi, HMV’s first Bengali singer.

SRK, Amitabh Bachchan, Govinda have an ‘Aawara Bhanwre’ connection!
Guess what was musically common between four big name actors who took to the microphone between 2000 and 2006? Shah Rukh Khan in Josh, Amitabh Bachchan in Baghban, Naseeruddin Shah in Asambhav and Govinda in Sandwich, all had Hema Sardesai, the ‘Awara bhanwre’ girl, as their co-singer in the songs from these films!

When Dev Anand inaugurated a ‘musical’ park!
Did you know that in 2002, Dev Anand, no less, had inaugurated a musical jogging park in Mumbai’s suburb of Mulund? The 488 meter jogging-track had film melodies from the 1950s and 1960s played from concealed audio-focal speakers fitted cleverly into the lamp posts dotting the area!

Tusshar Kapoor’s ‘Nikamma’ connection with daily soap ‘Kyunki Saas…’
Before it was re-created in the recent dud Nikamma as the ‘title-track”, Himesh Reshammiya’s hit ‘Nikamma kiya iss dil ne’ was used in its original avatar in Ekta Kapoor’s TV show Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. The idea was to promote Ekta’s brother Tusshar Kapoor’s film Kyaa Dil Ne Kaha in 2002, for which the song was created.

Fan-inspired song immortalized by Kalyanji-Anandji
Kalyanji-Anandji’s immortal ‘Phool tumhe bheja hai khat mein’ from their National award-winning 1968 score Saraswatichandra was inspired by a fan sending the composers a letter with a flower inside it. Lyricist Indeevar took inspiration from this to write the Lata Mangeshkar hit for Nutan.

When KK experienced of singing in a ‘concert’ with Rajesh Roshan
Singing legend KK, who passed away recently, once remembered the only song he had recorded with a ‘live’ orchestra. Rajesh Roshan—for whom he later sang in Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage and Kites—had given KK a chance to do a live song in the early 1990s as a dubbing artiste for Kumar Sanu. “I was told that my voice would not be kept and the recording was at Mehboob Studios. I did it for that incredible experience—it was akin to singing at a concert!” recalled the singer.

Legendary composer Khayyam’s big compliment to Anu Malik
When the music of the new Umrao Jaan (2006) released, the veteran composer Khayyam, who has scored music for the landmark 1982 film of that name, graciously complimented Anu Malik for the quality of his melodies in the new album. “The composer today has to work under various pressures and that can be daunting!” he said. “Despite that, composers like Anu, Sajid-Wajid and Vishal-Shekhar too are doing good work,” he told me.

A.R. Rahman’s childhood days were with his father in the hospital
A.R. Rahman once told a poignant story of how he spent four years sitting next to his ailing dad in a Vellore hospital until he was nine years old! “I thought that’s what all kids did in those days, be among the doctors, nurses and medicines with their fathers!” he said wryly. Incidentally, the first paycheck he ever got was for Rs. 50!

How Mohammad Rafi’s biryani became a feast for composer Ravi’s staff
As an Eid gift, Mohammed Rafi would always send mutton biryani to composer Ravi, who was, however, a strict vegetarian. Not wanting to hurt Rafi’s feelings, Ravi would smilingly accept it and give it to his staff. This went on for years until one day, at a party, the singer saw Ravi refusing a non-vegetarian dish. It was then that the composer softly told Rafi that he did not want to refuse his big-hearted gesture!
