Bollywood Hungama spoke to trade experts in the first week of Dhurandhar and had asked them about their lifetime prediction. That was a time when no one imagined in their wildest dreams that the Ranveer Singh-starrer would do historic business and emerge as the first film to cross Rs. 200 crores in Week 2. The film has collected Rs. 479.50 crores in 2 weeks and crossed the Rs. 500 crore mark on its third Friday. Will the Aditya Dhar-directorial be able to cross the figures of Stree 2 (Rs. 627.02 crores) and emerge as the highest grosser of Bollywood ever? Also, can it cross the Rs. 700 crore mark and break the record of Pushpa 2 (Hindi version)?
We asked trade experts to comment on this aspect. Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “No one can predict the lifetime. I have always maintained that it is not the opening day number which will decide the final business of the film. There are times when a film shows rapid and amazing growth. There are umpteen examples like Sholay (1975) to Maine Pyar Kiya (1989) to Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994). But look at their lifetime business, and that’s what matters. Sadly, many in our industry start making conclusions based on the first day's business.”
He added, “This film has defied all predictions, estimations and calculations wrong by a wide, wide margin. Look at the way people were talking about it on day 1. Sabki bolti bandh hai!”
Girish Johar, producer and eminent film business analyst, said, “The way the film is trending, anything is possible. I think it’s for the first time ever that Week 2 is bigger than Week 1, at this scale. On its third Friday, Dhurandhar is doing better than Avatar: Fire And Ash, which is a new release. So, anything can happen. It can cross Rs. 600 crores mark and might even enter the Rs. 700 crore mark.”
Trade analyst Atul Mohan stated, “It’ll definitely cross Rs. 600 crores. It should end its run with earnings of more than Rs. 700 crores. The film is being widely discussed. Akshaye Khanna is dominating the Reels.”
Suniel Wadhwa, co-founder and director at film production and distribution firm Karmic Films, opined, “It can cross the business of Pushpa 2 as it has got potential. Dhurandhar has tremendous repeat value. People are watching it twice and even thrice and the film is thriving despite competition from Avatar: Fire And Ash.”
Taran Adarsh further said, “I have seen people celebrating a success, but this kind of celebration is rare. Not just the Hindi film industry but even the South is celebrating. So many filmmakers down South have appreciated the film. I am very happy that the producers invested a huge amount and showed confidence in this project. Jyoti Deshpande deserves distinction marks. For me, Jyoti Deshpande and Aditya Dhar are the biggest Dhurandhar’s of this film! We have seen these actors in other films also and we have seen them in this film; there’s a marked difference.”
He signed off by remarking, “The way Dhurandhar is performing, it’ll recover the investment of the second part from the first part itself!”
