‘Tirchi Topiwale’ fame Sonam goes down memory lane, “Retirement as an actor completed in this picture” : Bollywood News

The iconic song ‘Tirchi Topiwale’ from Rajiv Rai’s 1992 movie Tridev still remains one of the most popular dance numbers from mainstream Hindi cinema. Apart from it being catchy, the song also provided instant fame to actress Sonam, who was an important part of it. After appearing in a lot of films back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Sonam quit the industry after she got married to director Rajiv Rai himself at the age of just 19.

Now, after 30 years, Sonam has gone down memory lane and shared a picture of hers on Instagram back from her heydays while looking back at her ‘retirement.’ She captioned it, “Just Age 19… Retirement as an actor completed in this picture … Life in monochrome started creeping in.” The last sentence from her quote tries to indicate the end of her filmi career at a ripe young age.

Born in 1972, Sonam did her first film very early in her life in 1987 in the form of the Telugu film Samrat. Her first Hindi movie came a year later through the late Yash Chopra’s Vijay. Although she did quite a few times from here on, it was her role in Tridev that earned her fame.

Sonam ended up acting in over 30 films with her last being Insaaf Apne Lahoo Se in 1994. Directed by Latif Khan, the film also starred Shatrughan Sinha, Sanjay Dutt, Shekhar Suman and Farha Naaz.

Sonam had to relocate to Europe with Rajiv Rai after the latter had to flee because of issues with Mumbai’s underworld. Apart from Tridev, Rajiv also directed her in Vishwatma. The two have a son as their only child.
