THROWBACK: When Shah Rukh Khan, Yash Johar won hearts and BROKE industry norms; shared music profits with Jatin-Lalit for Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

The Indian Performing Right Society Ltd (IPRS) has proved to be a boon for music composers and lyricists as it has helped them get a share of the earnings of music. This was not the case earlier. Then, the musicians would be given a one-time fee for their services and they didn’t have any right on the huge earnings made by the producers and music companies from the sales of music. Hence, it was heartening to know that there were some individuals in the film industry who went against the tide and gave music composers their rightful due. Two of them are superstar Shah Rukh Khan and the deceased reputed producer, Yash Johar.

This was revealed by Jatin Pandit of Jatin-Lalit fame in an interview published in Komal Nahta’s Film Information magazine dated August 12, 2000. At one point in the conversation, he revealed, “Just the other day, Mr. Ramesh Taurani wrote to us stating that he was proud to be associated with Sarfarosh (1999). He also acknowledged that the music of Ghulam (1998) and Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai (1998) had sold like hotcakes and was selling even today.” When asked whether he got a slice of that cake, the music composer replied, “Nobody shares the cake!”

Jatin Pandit was then asked if he and Lalit Pandit would like to add a clause in the contract stating that they should get a share in the producers’ income from music sales. Jatin answered, “One shouldn’t impose oneself since we all agree to work for a price. However, Shah Rukh Khan and Yash Johar gave us a percentage from the music’s earnings for Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (2000) and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998).”

Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani was SRK’s first home production and starred him and Juhi Chawla in the lead roles. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai marked Karan Johar’s debut as a director. It featured Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji.
