Third weekend truth bomb: Dhurandhar 2 won the opening war, but Dhurandhar is winning the legs debate

en Bollywood News Third weekend truth bomb: Dhurandhar 2 won the opening war, but Dhurandhar is winning the legs debate

At first glance, comparing Dhurandhar and Dhurandhar 2 may seem unnecessary. The sequel has already raced far ahead in absolute terms and has put up numbers that very few Hindi films can even dream of. But box office analysis is not only about who is ahead on total. It is also about how a film is running, where the momentum is coming from, and what that says about its eventual finish. And that is precisely why the third weekend comparison between the two films is so important.

Dhurandhar vs Dhurandhar 2 box office comparison showing stronger third weekend performance

Third weekend truth bomb: Dhurandhar 2 won the opening war, but Dhurandhar is winning the legs debate

The biggest takeaway from the current trend is simple: Dhurandhar 2 is undeniably bigger, but Dhurandhar was clearly leggier.

Let us look at the numbers. The third weekend of Dhurandhar stood at:
Friday: Rs. 23.70 crore
Saturday: Rs. 35.70 crore
Sunday: Rs. 40.30 crore

That gave the first film a third weekend total of Rs. 99.70 crore.

Now compare that with Dhurandhar 2, whose third weekend stands at:
Friday: Rs. 21 crore
Saturday: Rs. 25 crore
Sunday: Rs. 28 crore

That gives the sequel a third weekend total of Rs. 74 crore.

The difference is striking. Despite opening on a much bigger scale, Dhurandhar 2’s third weekend is lower by Rs. 29.70 crore, which means it is running nearly 25 percent below the first film at the same stage. That is not a minor fluctuation. That is a meaningful trend signal.

What makes this more revealing is the context. A sequel that opens much higher is expected to remain stronger than the original for longer, especially through the weekends, because it has the advantage of franchise recall, higher awareness, wider release and stronger initial urgency. But when such a sequel falls below the original by the third weekend, it tells the trade that the film is far more frontloaded than its predecessor.

That frontloading is also visible in the weekend-to-weekend progression. Dhurandhar collected Rs. 146.60 crore in its second weekend and then came down to Rs. 99.70 crore in its third weekend. That is a decline of roughly 32 percent, which is healthy for a film of that size and indicates strong audience retention. Dhurandhar 2, on the other hand, collected Rs. 164 crore in its second weekend but has dropped to Rs. 74 crore in its third weekend. That is a much sharper decline of roughly 54 percent.

This is where the real story lies. The sequel is still running at an extraordinary level and remains one of the biggest Hindi grossers in the market. But the shape of its run is now different from the first film’s. Dhurandhar behaved like a film that kept building trust with audiences week after week. Dhurandhar 2 is behaving more like an event blockbuster that exploded early, extracted huge value upfront, and is now normalising faster.

There is nothing inherently wrong with that. In today’s theatrical environment, many event films are built to do exactly that. They generate immense urgency in the first two weekends, capitalise on scale, fan frenzy and pre-release hype, and then settle into a steeper decline. In fact, one could argue that Dhurandhar 2 has simply adapted better to the current market reality, where bigger openings often come at the cost of longer legs.

The film is still heading for a giant lifetime total, but the comparison with Dhurandhar suggests that the ceiling may not stretch as far as the early hysteria had hinted. In other words, Dhurandhar 2 has won the battle of scale, but Dhurandhar still holds the edge in staying power.

That is what makes this comparison so fascinating. It is not a debate over which film is more successful. On that count, the sequel is already historic. The real insight is about box office character. The first film had deeper legs. The second film has greater explosive force. One ran like a long-distance champion. The other has run like a sprinting giant.

And perhaps that is the fairest way to understand the franchise today. Dhurandhar created faith. Dhurandhar 2 monetised that faith on a much bigger opening base. But by the third weekend, the first part still looks like the more enduring runner.

For the trade, that is not a criticism of the sequel. It is simply the most accurate reading of the numbers. And as always in box office analysis, accuracy matters more than excitement.

Veteran trade analyst Taran Adarsh doesn’t believe that the third weekend scenario of Dhurandhar 2 is an area of concern. He shared his reasons saying, “I don't think the fact that the third weekend numbers of Dhurandhar 2 are lesser than Dhurandhar Part 1 should raise eyebrows because if you look at the trend of Dhurandhar 1st part, in the first few days, it did not really take off the way it should. Yes, Saturday was better, Sunday was better. But from Monday and Tuesday onwards, it really gathered momentum and speed.”

He continued, “But in the case of Dhurandhar 2, the ground was already set and it was basically from (paid) previews itself that the film took an unheard of start. So, what you saw was a hurricane, a typhoon, a tsunami, whatever you call it, which was not the case with Dhurandhar 1. That film went from strength to strength with each passing week.”

Adarsh also said that the third weekend number of Dhurandhar 2, which is Rs. 74 crores, is still massive. “Yes, it is lesser than the first film, but then again, as I said, Dhurandhar wasn't as big as Dhurandhar 2. So, basically, now what has happened is the second week was bigger. But then, if you look at the day-by-day strength of the first week, it was something else.”

He also pointed out that we can’t overlook the milestones Dhurandhar 2 has achieved. “It is one film which is on the verge of hitting Rs. 1000 crores, which has never been seen before for Hindi films, even in the domestic market,” he said. “But the best part is, it's all in the family. Dhurandhar 1 and Dhurandhar 2 are one and the same thing. And at the same time, I feel both have set new benchmarks. If you look at the international numbers of Dhurandhar 2 also, it's historic.”

Adarsh also pointed out the top part of the list of highest grossing Hindi films ever. “Number one is Dhurandhar 2, number two is Dhurandhar. So, the first two spots have been occupied by Dhurandar. Number three is Pushpa 2 Hindi.”

The trade guru also mentioned that the success of the Dhurandhar franchise has stopped the naysayers who had predicted the end of Bollywood a few years ago. “Those who said, ‘Oh, Bollywood is down, and oh, Bollywood is not as talented’, Dhurandhar has nullified all those claims and busted all those theories. So, basically good content is back. And it’s good to see Bollywood delivering those numbers. That also shows the power of theatrical business. Dhurandhar genuinely has very good content. It's a heroic run. It's a superstar film. Films will come and go. People will always compare other films with Dhurandhar in times to come,” he concluded.
