Bollywood has happily hopped on the biopic bandwagon since few years. Every now and then, a biopic or a film based on true events releases in cinemas and the number has increased this year. In the last two months, we saw at least four such films – Raazi, Parmanu – The Story of Pokhran, Sanju and Soorma. Next month will see the release of Akshay Kumar-starrer Gold, based on independent India’s first victory in the world of hockey.
One of the most keenly awaited biopics is also Manikarnika – The Queen Of Jhansi. It stars Kangana Ranaut in the leading role as the brave Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi, one of the most revered heroes throughout the country. Directed by Gabbar Is Back director Krish, this film is mounted on a huge scale. Despite Kangana’s recent films underperforming, Manikarnika – The Queen Of Jhansi is expected to have a decent run at the box office. And if the content resonates with the audience, then it can be a surprise success. However, since a long time, the film’s release plan wasn’t fixed and it also faced some postponements. But a few days ago, the makers announced that it’ll release next year on Republic Day.
This announcement has shocked and also amused many. After all, if Manikarnika – The Queen Of Jhansi releases on the said date, then it’ll clash with Super 30. It is a real-life inspiring story of Anand Kumar and his initiative of providing coaching to economically backward students of the IIT-JEE. Hrithik Roshan plays the main lead and it’s a fairly common knowledge that he and Kangana can’t see eye to eye. The way both have washed their dirty linen in public and criticized the other is unprecedented. With Manikarnika – The Queen Of Jhansi and Super 30 clashing, it’s seems that the next round of their feud might commence as well.
Manikarnika – The Queen Of Jhansi and Super 30 are not just the only films scheduled to release on Republic Day as of now. Thackeray, the film based on the life of Balasaheb Thackeray, one of the most influential figures of Maharashtra and even Indian politics, will also release during the said period. Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays the lead role in this flick which releases in Hindi as well as Marathi. The release date is significant for the makers as it coincides with the birth anniversary of Balasaheb (January 23). Also, Shiv Sena, the firebrand political party founded by him, has backed the film and there are talks that they’ll easily find sufficient screens for this film in Maharashtra at least, by hook or by crook. Hence, expect issues over screen sharing to arise as the release date nears.
Trade also feels that one of these three films would move ahead but that’s unlikely in case of Thackeray, considering the significance of the date for them. So will it be Manikarnika – The Queen Of Jhansi or Super 30 that would get out of this rat race? Or will all three films stay put and try their luck together? If that happens, it’ll be a first that three significant biopics releasing on the same day. Never before has this happened in the history of not just Indian but also world cinema! Let the madness begin!
