en Bollywood News Special Report: Ranbir Kapoor becomes the FIRST Bollywood actor post-COVID to deliver a hattrick of Rs. 100 cr + movies at the India box office

The recently released film Animal has emerged as a true-blue blockbuster and has made it loud and clear that Ranbir Kapoor is a superstar. The actor has delivered some flops in his career and worked in movies that appealed to a niche audience. At the same time, however, he also dabbled in films dipping with mass appeal and that helped him amass a fan following across the country. Post-pandemic, he has had four releases and the last three of them have entered the Rs. 100 crores club. Incidentally, he’s the only actor from Bollywood to achieve this feat at the domestic box office till now.

Before the pandemic, Ranbir Kapoor was last seen in the blockbuster Sanju (2018), collecting Rs. 342.53 crores. After a gap of more than four years, Ranbir returned to the big screen with Shamshera (2022). Though it was an expensive film and was intended to be a massy film, it didn’t find many takers and ended its run with a disappointing Rs. 42.48 crores.

Then came Brahmastra (2022). There was a lot of negativity from a section of social media users. However, the excitement outweighed the trolling and it opened very well. The reports were positive and it ended up earning Rs. 257.44 crores at the India box office. It ensured that the upcoming part will also open on a strong note.

Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar (2023) came at a time when the audience was still not venturing out in huge numbers to watch films that weren’t VFX-heavy or larger-than-life. Yet, this romcom, directed by Luv Ranjan, and co-starring Shraddha Kapoor, had an opening of Rs. 15.73 crores. The word of mouth was very strong and slowly, it picked up in smaller centres, despite the urban feel. It ended its lifetime collections at Rs. 149.05 crores.

And finally, Animal became Ranbir Kapoor’s biggest hit and one of the biggest successes of Indian cinema. The teaser and posters had done the trick. But the trailer generated a tremendous craze. It led to a stunning opening of Rs. 63.80 crores. The film was ‘A’ rated and was more than 3 hours long. On top of it, Sam Bahadur was released on the same day and since it also opened well, its shows couldn’t be reduced to accommodate Animal. Yet, Animal broke all myths and had huge collections. As of Monday, December 11, it has collected Rs. 448.34 crores in India in all languages. It has been a surprise blockbuster even in Telugu and it will surely benefit Ranbir Kapoor in this territory for his upcoming films.

Incidentally, when it comes to actresses, Ranbir Kapoor’s wife Alia Bhatt is the only one who has given a hattrick of Rs. 100 crore movies at the India box office.
