Sonam Kapoor is one of the biggest stars of this country. Sonam won the audience and critics with her performance in Neerja earlier this year. At a recent actresses’ roundtable interview, Sonam Kapoor spoke about the time she was molested at the age of 14.
The round table interview included Vidya Balan, Alia Bhatt, Anushka Sharma, Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor where they talked about serious issues like molestation and rape and how issues like these are important to be shown in the films. She said, “Everybody goes through some sort of sexual abuse in their childhood. I know I have been molested in my childhood and I didn’t speak about it for maybe like two or three years. I remember the incident so clearly. I was going to watch a Raveena Tandon–Akshay Kumar film and I went with my friends to Gaiety Galaxy theatre. We were all 13-14 years olds and sitting near the stalls back in the day. We all went out to get these samosas and we used to keep our hands on each other’s shoulders. I was the last one as I was the tallest. I was holding a friend’s shoulder. It was my friend Ekta’s birthday. Then, a man came from behind and held my breasts. I didn’t have breasts that time obviously but I started shaking and shivering and I didn’t know what was going on. I was crying and didn’t speak about it. I just sat there and finished watching the film because I felt like I had done something wrong for the longest time.”
Other actresses on the panel were stunned by Sonam Kapoor’s confession but she made sure to talk about it because it is the issue people face in their lives. She said that it is really an important issue to be talked about in public.
