Singer and activist Sona Mohapatra has come out in support of Alia Bhatt after the actor faced criticism on social media for her hosting debut at the Chetak Screen Awards 2026. Several users had described her monologue as “overacting,” but Mohapatra argued that the challenges of performing live are often overlooked.

Sharing a video on Instagram, Mohapatra pointed out that Bhatt’s performance took place in a live setting, which leaves little room for correction. She said, “First things first, guys, it was live. Live means no retake, no edit, no filter, no rethink. And honestly, doing such authentic work in Bollywood is a big stunt. Most desi actors won’t even pick up that mic. She gave it a shot, and that itself is amazing. It is brave.”
Mohapatra also drew attention to what she described as the difficult nature of industry audiences at such events. According to her, the energy in the room plays a significant role in how a performance lands. She said that the audience present at film industry gatherings is often not as responsive as expected, adding that performers sometimes struggle despite their efforts.
Recalling her own experiences, she cited the Mijwan Fashion Show as an example. “It is full of stars, designer outfits, flashbulbs, and audience energy zero,” she said, explaining that even at events organised for meaningful causes, the engagement from attendees can be limited. She added that such environments can make it harder for performers to connect with the room.
Referring directly to Bhatt’s monologue, Mohapatra suggested that not every moment that falls flat should be attributed to the performer alone. “So here, Alia, when jokes don’t land, sometimes the problem is not in you, not in the mic, it’s in the room,” she said.
She also addressed comparisons being made online between Bhatt and stand-up comedian Zakir Khan, calling them unfair. Mohapatra described Khan as “a consummate ustad of stand-up” and noted that the two operate in very different performance spaces. She added that Khan would likely have faced a different kind of audience response in the same setting.

In her remarks, Mohapatra also praised Ranveer Singh for being among the few in such gatherings who actively respond to performances. She described him as someone who engages with what is happening on stage rather than remaining disengaged.
Ending her message on a note of encouragement, Mohapatra expressed confidence that Bhatt would grow more comfortable with the format over time. She also urged the industry to be more supportive of performers attempting something new, suggesting that audiences at such events should respond more generously instead of remaining reserved.
