Smriti Irani, who has now moved into politics, gained fame as one of the most iconic stars of Indian television as Tulsi from Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. The Star Plus show had helped her gain fame as an actress but before becoming the star, Smriti recalled her struggling days. The actress was already a mother when she was doing Kyunkii and recalled the time she suffered a miscarriage with her second child during the shoot of the show.
In an interview with ETimes, Smriti Irani revealed that she had to rush to a nearby hospital after she suffered a miscarriage on her way to visit her doctor in Four Bungalows in suburban Mumbai. The actress also mentioned about how she continued work despite feeling unwell. She said, "I was on the sets of Kyunkii and I told the team that I wasn't feeling well. I did not know at that time I was pregnant. As I worked 18-20 hours a day, nobody kind of believed that I was unwell. I asked them to take my shots first as I was genuinely unwell, but I kept working. By the time I left, it was already evening. I told my doctor that I was unwell, and he asked me to go to a hospital and get the sonography done.”
She continued, “I was in the Four Bungalows market in Mumbai. Zubin was out of the country and Zor my son was at home. It was raining and I started bleeding, so I asked the auto driver to take me to a local clinic in Lokhandwala. When I reached there, a nurse came running to ask for an autograph. I was bleeding but I signed her the autograph. I asked her, 'Admit kar loge, I think I am miscarrying’. I called my place and arranged for someone to stay with my son Zor as I was in the hospital."
After the incident, the actress also revealed that she got a call from the sets of the Ekta Kapoor show asking her to come for the shoot the next day for Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahut Thi despite her informing them that she miscarried. “I said ‘I told you I had a miscarriage, I was bleeding’. The person on the call replied, 'Koi nahi, 2 baje ki shift mein aa jaiye' (No problem, you take the 2 pm shift).” Smriti also further went on to explain that at that point of time, she was juggling between twin shifts; the first half of her day that kicked off from 7am, was her shoot for Ravi Chopra's Ramayan whereas the other half of the day was dedicated to Ekta Kapoor's Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi which would start around 2 pm.
Despite her dedication and also returning to the sets right after miscarriage, the actress had to face another harrowing accusation when one of her co-stars allegedly claimed that Smriti was faking the miscarriage and even tried to manipulate Ekta Kapoor against Irani. “The person said, ‘Arre iska kya baccha waccha marta hai toh kya aata hai kya koi set par. That person did not realise that I had come back on the sets to work as I had responsibilities,” Smriti stated.
However, the actress also maintained that she didn’t want Ekta to doubt her and clarified the issue by taking her medical papers to the producer. “This was in 2001. I needed money to pay EMIs for my house. I completed the shoot for that day and the next day, I took all my medical papers and reached Ekta to inform her it is not a drama. She got uncomfortable and told me not to show the papers. I told her, ‘If you have believed even a bit of her then this is the proof’. Foetus bacha nahi, warna woh bhi dikha deti (I would have shown you the foetus also had it been there),” concluded Irani.
For the unversed, Smriti Irani is currently into politics and is the Minister of Women and Child Development as well as the Minister of Minority Affairs.
