Shefali Shah has always shared her thoughts with a simple honesty that feels familiar and relatable. Her recent note on Instagram reflected that same straightforward warmth, turning a regular family trip into a quiet reflection on who she is today and the different versions of herself she has grown through over the years.

She writes about a long-awaited “once in a lifetime” trip the kind she had imagined since childhood while looking at postcard-perfect places. But the excitement soon mixes with the usual pre-travel chaos: the stress of packing, overstuffed bags, disagreements over food, itineraries that miss something you wanted, and everyone feeling a bit on edge. Leaving home later than planned, getting stuck in traffic at midnight, worrying about missing the flight, standing in long airport lines all of it becomes part of the process. And through it all, she feels the quiet sadness of leaving her pups behind.
To everyone around them, it looks like a happy family excited for their trip. But Shefali finds herself noticing something different the one woman who seems slightly distant. She wanders off now and then, or hides behind a book, keeping to herself in the middle of all the noise.

Looking for something she doesn’t really need. Ironically, that woman is her. The same woman who spent years waiting for this trip, adjusting life, aligning schedules, making space for a moment that was supposed to feel perfect. A woman who finds her deepest joy in togetherness, yet somehow feels like the outsider in the middle of it.
She remembers another version of herself too from a solo trip two years ago that wasn’t a choice but a circumstance. A woman alone, slightly disappointed, trying to find joy in her own company. A woman who slowly realised that even in solitude, she wasn’t lonely.
“That woman too was me,” she writes, holding both truths without apology.
In one breath she moves from being “Mother India,” holding everything up… to being “Simran,” running toward life with the wind in her hair… to now, embarking on a ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’ style family adventure, “Shah and sons” heading to watch Taare Zameen Par. The humour of it, the tenderness, the contradictions, she embraces all of it.
And before she signs off, she leaves a reminder for herself, and for every woman who has ever been too much, too little, too emotional, too quiet, too present, or too distant, “Do not forget, darling… alone or with others, you are enough.”
