Sharmila Tagore reveals her reasons for doing films; says, “Sometimes we sign a film for money, just to pay the rent”

Veteran Bollywood actress, Sharmila Tagore hasn't been acting regularly these days. However, she is still regarded as one of the greatest actress in Indian cinema history. The actor is soon going to make a comeback on March 3, in Gulmohar. In an interview, Sharmila opened up on her reasons for doing films.

In a chat with India Today, when the actor was asked why she chose certain movies, she responded, “Well, we as professionals, sometimes sign a film for money, just to pay the rent. Sometimes we help a colleague or somebody who thinks if I’m in the project, the project will do well. So, I’ve made films for many reasons.”

She added, “I think, overall, I’ve done it for because I liked the script and, at that point of time, that it was necessary. But at this point of time, where I am today, Kusum was necessary.” Kusum is her character’s name in Gulmohar.

Sharmila Tagore recently attended the special screening of Gulmohar along with Manoj Bajpayee and other cast and crew members in Delhi. Photos and videos from the events are doing rounds on the internet. At the screening, she said, “I hope you liked the movie. I am seeing it for the third time and I was still crying profusely, although I am in it. Of course, working with Manoj, Suraj… actually he makes me cry. I kind of vibe with this young lot. They make it so difficult for themselves. They can easily take their father’s money and get on, but they have to punish themselves. This is an assured debut film by Rahul and so well written.”

Gulmohar is directed by Rahul V.Chittella. The film will see the luminous and graceful Sharmila Tagore return to cinema after 12 years, with acting powerhouses Manoj Bajpayee, Amol Palekar, Simran and Suraj Sharma. Gulmohar, which is set in Delhi, chronicles the Batra family's final four days in their 34-year-old house before they move to a new city.

Directed by Rahul Chittella, written by Rahul Chittella and Arpita Mukherjee, Gulmohar will stream on Disney+ Hotstar from March 3, 2023.
