Shammi Kapoor never asked Neela Devi to not have children; wife of late actor confesses, “It was solely my decision”

Neela Devi recalled a small memory that changed her bond with Shammi Kapoor’s kids Aditya and Kanchan.

The love story of Shammi Kapoor and Geeta Bali is known to many as they were one of the first ‘it’ couples of Bollywood. In a recent interview, Neela Devi, the second wife of the Kapoor star, opened up about their children Aditya and Kanchan Kapoor and revealed the reason behind her not opting for her own children with the legendary actor. For the unversed, Shammi Kapoor married Neela Devi in 1969 after his first wife Geeta passed away in 1965.

Neela Devi, who hails from a royal family, recalled her days with late actor Shammi Kapoor and opened up about their marriage in an interview with ETimes. During the same, she also discussed the reason behind her not opting for motherhood. Neela Devi revealed that she was very close to her sister’s children and recalled an incident that prompted her to take this decision. Neela Devi had once visited her sister’s house with Shammi Kapoor and was playing with her children, when they crawled their way onto her lap. When they returned home, Shammi expressed his desire to see her share the same bond with his kids, Aditya and Kanchan.

“He didn’t say anything at that time but when we came home, he just said one sentence ‘I will be the happiest the day I see Kanchan and Aditya in your lap like that’,” said Neela Devi. She further went on to add that it was that moment that she decided to not have kids of her own. However, she asserted that Aditya and Kanchan grew up to be quite close and fond of her, and now consider her as their mother. “That day I decided that I will see to it that they become my real children and they have not let me down. They both have been amazing. The respect, love and care they show towards me, it was worth it. Everything was worth it. I don’t regret it even once that I didn’t…” she added.

Neela Devi also asserted that ‘It was 100 percent’ her decision adding that her in-laws had many questions when she broke the news to them. She also stated that Shammi Kapoor continued to request her to reconsider the decision but she never wanted to. Neela Devi concluded by adding that she is content with her decision as she shares the same motherly bond with Geeta’s children Aditya and Kanchan.
