Shah Rukh Khan song ‘Not Ramaiya Vastavaiya’ was originally intended to be shot in Abu Dhabi, but extreme heat and prosthetic makeup forced a change

Choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant shared behind-the-scenes details of Jawan’s song ‘Not Ramaiya Vastavaiya.’

Shah Rukh Khan's latest film, Jawan, was a critical and commercial success, with its song ‘Not Ramaiya Vastavaiya’ becoming a particular hit with audiences. The song was choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant, who recently shared some behind-the-scenes details of the song in an interview with Zoom.

Merchant revealed that Khan had to endure lengthy sessions of prosthetic makeup in order to shoot the song, as he played both the father and son characters. She said, “The prosthetic makeup used to take Shah Rukh two-and-a-half hours on the chair. So for him to go from the son’s character to the father’s character and for me to do that on Bolt. We shot it with this special camera that is a motion control camera called the Bolt, which itself takes about two-and-a-half hours to program. So, we used to be pre-programmed and then he would do one character, then go back, take two hours on the chair.”

She further added, “Like we would always do the father’s character first because that would take time, then switch him back. It would take time for him to get into the son’s character because he would have to take out all the prosthetics. Now, mind you, even though we were on an AC set, he would sweat a lot.”

The choreographer also revealed that the song was originally intended to be shot in Abu Dhabi, but the outdoor shoot had to be cancelled due to the extreme heat and Khan wearing layers of prosthetics. The song was ultimately shot in 15 days. Merchant praised Khan's work ethic and dedication, saying that he went "out of his way" to take care of the team during the shoot. She also said that Khan "bent backwards" to ensure that everyone involved in the film was well looked after.

Speaking of the film, Jawan, directed by Atlee Kumar, also stars Vijay Sethupathi and Nayanthara along with Deepika Padukone in a special role. It was released on September 7 and went on to create several box office records. The film will soon start streaming on Netflix.
