Veteran actor Shabana Azmi recently spoke about the suppression of women in India across centuries as she was asked about the Justice Hema Committee Report during media interactions at IIFA (International Indian Film Academy Awards) 2024.

Shabana Azmi opens up on Hema Committee Report; says, “Women in India have had their own journey across centuries”

“You must understand that women in India have had their own journey across centuries. From the 16th to the 21st, they've progressed, but are also suppressed,” Shabana said when asked about the harassment female artists in Malayalam cinema faced, which came to light in the Hema Committee Report.

She further added, “Women have been this contradiction in India of progression and suppression, just like India itself.”

The Hema Committee Report has brought attention to the pervasive and ongoing issue of sexual harassment experienced by women in Malayalam cinema, with numerous individuals reporting unwanted advances even before starting their work. The report also revealed a lack of essential facilities, such as changing rooms and restrooms for women. In addition to these harassment allegations, it noted significant pay disparities, with female artists earning considerably less than their male colleagues.

While speaking to the media in Abu Dhabi, where the IIFA 2024 is set to take place on September 28, Shabana Azmi expressed her desire to see a re-release of her 1982 film Arth, directed by Mahesh Bhatt and featuring Anupam Kher. The film's focus on women's empowerment aligns with ongoing discussions about gender issues in the industry.

Having recently celebrated 50 years in Indian cinema, Shabana Azmi was last seen in Karan Johar's Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, which also featured stars like Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Dharmendra, and Jaya Bachchan.
