While Jab Khuli Kitaab began as a stage play, writer–director Saurabh Shukla always imagined the story as a film. Built around the emotional complexities of a long marriage and the fragile layers of trust within a family, the story demanded actors who could bring depth, nuance, and lived-in authenticity to the characters. For Shukla, the role of Gopal was always associated with one name, Pankaj Kapur.
Speaking about the casting process, Saurabh Shukla shared that while he had Pankaj Kapur in mind from the very beginning, approaching him felt daunting. “In my mind, I kept imagining that he would be busy, or that he might not like the script. You rehearse how you will explain the story to him. But when I finally approached him, none of that happened. He simply said, ‘Leave it with me, I’ll read it.’ A few days later he called with a few questions, and then he said he was doing the film,” he recalled.
The film also brought together another legendary performer, Dimple Kapadia, as Ansuya. Shukla admitted he initially doubted she would come on board, but her response surprised him. “I sent her the script thinking I might get a polite refusal after a few weeks. But she called me within three days and said she loved the script and wanted to do it. Having actors like Pankaj ji and Dimple ji, not just incredible performers but also deeply sensitive people, added so much nuance to the film,” he said.
With such powerful actors embodying the story’s emotional core, Jab Khuli Kitaab transforms a deeply personal relationship drama into a layered cinematic experience that explores trust, love, and the reactions that follow life’s unexpected truths. The film is now streaming on ZEE5.
