One of the most memorable events in Indian TV history is the fight that took place between Sajid Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker during the 2009 Star Screen Awards. When Ashutosh came to collect the award for Jodhaa Akbar (2008), he slammed Sajid for making fun of celebs. Sajid Khan, a few days back, gave a rare interview to a YouTube channel ‘Timeout With Ankit’ wherein he opened up on this incident.
When asked if the whole fight was scripted, Sajid replied, “It wasn’t. There’s a video on YouTube about Will Smith’s slapgate incident at the Oscars. And the text on the video is ‘we did it before’! Technically, however, we didn’t slap each other.”
Sajid Khan continued, “Ashutosh is like an elder brother to me. I have known him for many years. Farah and I were there when he got married. It’s not like we are sworn enemies. Every 2 weeks, we have a meal together. Sunita (Sunita Gowariker; wife) and Ashu are like family. I love them.”
However, he confessed, “Now, I tell him that the Sajid Khan of today would like to tell Sajid Khan of 2009 that, ‘Boss, go easy on the jokes. You are not realizing but you are hurting people’. My job was to make people laugh. And while doing so, we cross the limit. So when people laugh, you feel there’s acceptance. And I work without a script. Hence, I have put my foot in my mouth in many shows.”
Looking back at the episode, he said, “In that moment, things went a little ballistic. And he (Ashutosh Gowariker) was right in what he was saying. And so was I. After all, my job is not to serve a few filmmakers. My job is to serve the public.”
At another point in the show, Sajid Khan spoke of his ex-girlfriend and why she poured hot water on him in a cinema hall! Sajid, in his entertaining style, narrated, “This happened in 1995. I had just started coming on TV. I was dating this very nice girl. She used to carry hot water with her because she did not trust mineral water. We were in the Regal cinema and my ex-girlfriend was seated in front of me. She turned around and asked me how I was doing. I said I was fine. She said ‘We’ll talk in the interval’.”
Sajid added, “My girlfriend asked me, ‘Who is she?’. I said ‘No one’. She asked me again and I answered, ‘She’s a fan’!” She replied, ‘She didn’t talk to you like a fan’. I argued, ‘I am on TV. People know me’. (laughs).”
Things then turned bad for Sajid, “My ex-girlfriend again turned around and asked, ‘I am going out to get a coffee. Do you want something?’. I declined and she said, ‘I know you like samosas. I’ll get it for you’!” My girlfriend asked me, ‘How does she know that you like samosa?’”
Sajid then admitted that she was his ex-girlfriend. Sajid revealed, “She said, ‘So your ex-girlfriend wants to get samosa for you and water for you to drink? Here, drink this water’. And she poured hot water on me! I was screaming and shouting. The moviegoers in the balcony started laughing.”
Sajid Khan said, “She left and Die Hard 3 was about to start. The moviegoers recognized me, meanwhile. I got up, bowed down in front of them and walked out very sheepishly!”
The drama was not over. Sajid narrated, “She was standing outside the theatre. She asked me, ‘Where’s my flask?’ (laughs)!” He then said, “I met her 6-7 years ago. She has kids. I reminded her of the incident. She told me, ‘You were stupid enough to go back and get the flask’!”
