Yash Raj Films’ romantic blockbuster Saiyaara, which became one of the highest-grossing romantic films in Indian cinema, added another milestone by winning the Popular Choice Award at the Yellowstone International Film Festival 2025.
The award was received by Akshaye Widhani, CEO of Yash Raj Films, along with the film’s director Mohit Suri, at a prestigious ceremony in Mumbai celebrating excellence in cinema.
Starring Gen Z actors Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda in their big-screen debut, Saiyaara created a major pop culture moment, drawing comparisons to Hrithik Roshan and Ameesha Patel’s launch with Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai 25 years ago. The film’s historic debut and universal appeal helped redefine romance for contemporary audiences.
Saiyaara also set several records, including the highest-ever opening for debut actors, a title track that became the first Hindi song to feature in the Billboard Top 10 worldwide, and months-long dominance on music streaming charts. The film also became the only debutant-led movie to gross Rs. 580 crores worldwide.
The Popular Choice Award at YIFF 2025, the film’s first award as the awards season began, reaffirmed its strong connection with audiences and its role in reviving romantic films at the box office.
Speaking at the event, Akshaye Widhani said, “Thank you, Yellowstone International Film Festival. This is our first award for Saiyaara, which makes it really special. I think Saiyaara and Mohit are inseparable—this film has been an amazing journey since early 2024. It being the highest-grossing love story is something we are proud of. Mohit did an exceptional job, and we’re grateful to audiences worldwide for embracing the film, the music, and our Gen Z stars, Ahaan and Aneet. This award belongs to the entire cast and crew who worked tirelessly to make it happen.”
Director Mohit Suri added, “This award is very special to me. In my 20-year career, this is my first award. There have been many firsts with this film—new actors, my first film with YRF, and Akshaye producing his first film. When I presented the script, Adi sir and Akshaye trusted me completely. They never pressured me to make a hit or blockbuster—they wanted my best film and music. That freedom allowed me to create the film I truly believed in. This recognition shows that staying true to your story eventually brings both audience love and acclaim.”
Saiyaara’s win at YIFF 2025 further solidified its legacy as a film that succeeded both commercially and emotionally, proving that well-crafted romance remains a powerful force in Indian cinema.
