Two decades after portraying the role of Pooja, the love interest of Sameer played by Saif Ali Khan, in the iconic Dil Chahta Hai, Sonali Kulkarni now stars alongside his legendary mother, Sharmila Tagore, in the upcoming film Outhouse. This unique journey, spanning generations, has Sonali very excited.

Sonali Kulkarni talks about playing Sharmila Tagore’s daughter

Reflecting on the experience, Sonali shares, “The film revolves around how bonds are refreshed through unexpected situations. Sharmila ji and I share a typical mother-daughter relationship, where my character is perpetually dissatisfied, expecting more from her mother. Sharmila ji plays a beautifully composed mother, unfazed by all the tantrums from her children. It’s a slice-of-life film that captures the nuances of family dynamics.”

Sonali reveals working with Sharmila Tagore was a career highlight.

She continued speaking about her experience of sharing screen space with the Kashmir Ki Kali actress and added, “It was the first time I got to share screen space with Sharmila ji, and it was fabulous. She has an incredible discipline and the ability to connect deeply with her co-actors. Despite being a superstar and a veteran actor, she is very humble & rooted. She wouldn’t even ask for a chair on set, instead, she would sit on the steps discussing scenes. She’s so cool, energetic, and absolutely genuine- a rare find in our industry.”

Sonali also reflected on the serendipity of working with both Saif and Sharmila

Remarking on the same, Kulkarni shared, “Twenty years ago, I played Saif’s girlfriend, and now I’m playing Sharmila ji’s on-screen daughter. It was such a cute and heartwarming experience. Over two decades and two generations, I feel blessed that I have had a steady run to experience this serendipity."

Directed by the acclaimed Sunil Sukthankar, and produced by Dr. Mohan Agashe, Outhouse also stars Neeraj Kabi, Rajeshwari Sachdev, among others.
