Robert Pattinson gets candid about getting in shape for shirtless scenes in The Batman – “You’re counting sips of water”

Robert Pattinson, who stars as the titular superhero in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, revealed the measures he had to take in order to transform into the iconic caped crusader and talked about his fitness and diet routine for the upcoming reboot.

The 35-year-old actor opened up to People magazine about preparing for the role of iconic vigilante as well as taking care of his physique. The British actor reveals he put in months of work to prepare his body for the role. "I had about three months before the movie started, and then you're working out before and after work all the time," he told the outlet on the red carpet at The Batman premiere on Tuesday night in New York City.

“You just cut down and cut down and cut down before the couple of scenes with your shirt off, and you’re counting sips of water,” he added stressing on how he had to be careful about every single thing he was consuming. The Twilight star even joked that knowing he had to be shirtless in a scene was a huge motivation. "Oh yeah. Shame is my biggest motivator, 100%," he said.

Considering how epic the character of Batman is in the superhero universe, the actor also revealed that he had an emotional moment when he first put on the suit and that it was then that he truly connected with the character. "It's funny because you read the script and you spend loads of time trying to figure out, 'How can I play this character who does these sort of audacious acts?'” he continued.

“And the closer I got to the shoot, I got more and more paranoid — you know, it feels ridiculous when you're just sitting at home in a t-shirt — and then you put it on," he added speaking of the suit. "It's got an elemental power to it."

Talking about the power of his costume aiding in his transformation, once it was on, "People react to you differently, the crew reacts differently. Your entire world suddenly changes. And then you kind of catch this glimpse in like, the subtle reflection or a shadow on the floor and you realize that the character's just way bigger than you," Pattinson said. "It's kind of like wearing a crown or something."

In The Batman, Robert Pattinson will be seen alongside Zoe Kravitz’s Catwoman, Paul Dano's the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright's Commissioner Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Colin Farrell's the Penguin. The film is all set to hit theaters on Friday, March 4.
