Yesterday late afternoon, the industry and music lovers across the world felt a deep pain as news came in that Pankaj Udhas is no more. The legendary ghazal singer passed away due to pancreatic cancer at the age of 72 in a hospital in Mumbai. He has a huge body of work thanks to his songs in the non-film space as well as in cinema. His tracks like ‘Chitti Aayi Hai’ from Naam (1986), ‘Jiye Toh Jiye Kaise’ from Saajan (1991), ‘Na Kajre Ki Dhar’ from Mohra (1994) etc. are unforgettable. Interestingly, he also had a Shah Rukh Khan connection though both never featured together for any song.
9 years ago, Shah Rukh Khan was asked by Mumbai Mirror about his first payment. The superstar revealed that he got paid Rs. 50 which he earned after working as an usher at Pankaj Udhas’ concert in Delhi. He further said that he spent this money on a fun trip to Agra.
Shah Rukh Khan revealed, “For one evening, I was an usher at a Pankaj Udhas’ Ghazal concert in Delhi and was paid Rs 50. With my first earnings, I took a train to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. I remember we had pink lassi there with sabza (basil) seeds. It was unforgettable!”
Then, in an interview with the Times Of India during the promotions of Raees (2017), SRK further opened up about this Agra trip, “Once there (in Agra), I remember they used to serve pink lassi. We were hungry and didn't have anything to eat but I remember the glass of lassi was very large. I had it and I remember seeing a bumble bee in it. So, the whole way back from Agra to Delhi I was sitting in the general compartment and throwing up."
Shah Rukh Khan, however, never mentioned what his age was when he got his first earnings.
