Exactly a year ago, the box office was in the doldrums, especially during the release of Aamir Khan-starrer Laal Singh Chaddha and Akshay Kumar-starrer Raksha Bandhan. Both these movies were released on August 11, 2022, with humongous expectations and they flopped miserably. 365 days later, the scenario is totally the opposite. The theatres are overflowing with audiences not just for the new releases but also for holdover films.
An exhibition source told Bollywood Hungama, “Today if you haven’t booked the tickets, be prepared to return home empty-handed. Almost all major Hindi and English films are running full today. This is not just in Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Kolkata but even in cities like Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Indore etc. Usually, when a biggie releases, most audiences prefer to watch that film instead of the old flicks. But this weekend, we saw all the films getting footfalls. I don’t remember when was the last time this happened. There’s jubilation in the exhibition sector.”
Gadar 2, as we all know, is unstoppable. It has collected Rs. 83.18 crores in two days and today, that is, Sunday, August 13, it is expected to collect Rs. 48 to 50 crores. This means that it’ll collect more than Rs. 130 crores in three days. It has taken a chunk of the shows in theatres in the Hindi-speaking markets. Bollywood Hungama was the first one to report that several theatres in smaller towns played post-midnight and early-morning shows for the first time ever for this film.
OMG 2, too, did quite well, considering it is an adults-only film. It has collected Rs. 25.56 crores in two days and today it will cross the Rs. 40 crores mark. This film has the potential to cross the Rs. 100 crores mark and emerge as a huge hit.
Jailer, starring Rajinikanth, also had a release in Hindi, on August 10. The film is playing in very limited screens but the response is extraordinary. All its shows are sold out for today in Mumbai. In other cities, too, the film is holding very well, though its target audience is the same as Gadar 2. Interestingly, Maxus Cinemas, Borivali, Mumbai has shows at 1:45 AM and 6:00 AM tomorrow, though it’s a working day. Maxus in Bhayandar will play Jailer’s Hindi version at 6:45 AM on Monday, August 14.
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani also has had reduced shows and is rock-steady. It collected Rs. 2.35 crores on Friday, which was just 17.95% drop from Thursday's collections of Rs. 3.20 crores. On Saturday, the collections jumped to Rs. 3.70 crores and today, it’ll go beyond Rs. 4 crores.
That’s not all. Not much was expected from Meg 2: The Trench, which was released on August 3. But it managed to earn Rs. 16.97 crores in Week one, which is nearly double of its predecessor, The Meg (2018). It has limited shows but the demand is tremendous.
The month of July saw the releases of Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning - Part One, Oppenheimer and Barbie. The first two have entered the Rs. 100 crore club. Yet, audiences continue to flock to the theatres to see these films despite the new releases. Barbie has released only in English version and yet, it has held exceptionally well. It has a shot at crossing Rs. 50 crores.
Lastly, Baipan Bhari Devi has already become the second biggest Marathi blockbuster, collecting more than Rs. 70 crores. Even then, it is still finding its audience in its seventh week. Several shows today across Maharashtra were sold out or almost full.
The source signed off by saying, “Picture abhi baaki hai. Tomorrow, the footfalls will increase after 6:00 PM. And Tuesday, August 15, will be huge when once again, all shows will be packed to capacity.”
