Radhika Apte, now celebrated for her versatility over a 20-year career, recently looked back on her very first film and admitted she would rather forget it altogether. In an interview reflecting on her journey, she spoke candidly about how difficult her debut in Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi! was, not because of her performance but because of the way she was treated during production.
Recalling the early days of her career, Apte didn’t mince words about the people behind the film. “The awful producers didn’t put me up, didn’t pay me. When my mother and I asked them to sign a contract, they said, ‘Arey, even Urmila Matondkar didn’t sign a contract. I don’t know if she signed or not,’ but they treated us horribly,” she said, adding, “Mahesh Manjrekar was a great guy. That’s why I like to forget my film because the production was awful! And I say it out loud.”
Apte, who had a supporting role in the film, also spoke about how she got the part. She explained that director Mahesh Manjrekar saw her in a stage play called Brain Surgeon, which won an award at a state competition. Manjrekar, impressed by her performance, told her, “I want to cast you.” After that experience, she took time to finish college before returning to films, which is why she doesn’t consider her debut as part of her real body of work.
Today, Radhika Apte is being lauded for her performance in Saali Mohabbat — a psychological thriller on ZEE5 that has earned acclaim at major festivals and highlights how far she has come since her difficult beginnings.
