Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra Jonas has opened up about why she recently maintained a security presence around her and her family, and made it clear it’s about privacy, not personal danger.
In a candid conversation with Variety, Priyanka explained that her primary motivation for having bodyguards isn’t fear for her own life. “I am ok with being approached by anyone and taking photos,” she said, underlining her appreciation for fans. “They (guards) know that I love people coming to talk to me. They were there to make sure we’re not being recorded without consent.”
Priyanka, who is a mother to three-and-a-half-year-old Malti Marie Chopra Jonas with husband Nick Jonas, spoke about how the security team’s role is largely about protecting private family moments from being captured and shared without permission in the age of ubiquitous smartphone cameras. “That’s my biggest thing with everyone having cell phones. It happens often, especially with my daughter… Suddenly I’ll see it online,” she added, reflecting a common frustration faced by many parents today.
Despite the added protection, Priyanka has been clear that her fans are still welcome. She reiterated that her security detail doesn’t create barriers between her and well-wishers, but rather ensures respect for consent, particularly where her child’s privacy is concerned. “Otherwise, I don’t need it. Nobody’s gonna kill me,” she emphasised.
Priyanka and Nick, who wed in 2018, have often shared glimpses of family life on social media, though they’ve also taken care to limit how much of Malti is shown publicly. The couple continues to balance their high-profile careers with efforts to give their daughter as normal a childhood as possible.
