Prakash Jha’s discovery Anjali in ‘Anti-rape’ film Kill The Rapist? : Bollywood News

Kill The Rapist?, a film where the victim female protagonist takes on her tormentor rapist and questions the world if killing him would be the right solution, boasts of an impressive casting. Anjali Patil, who had played a hot headed, intelligent yet sympathetic Naxalite in Prakash Jha's Chakravyuh, is the chosen one for the all important part. She was chosen amongst a score of actresses, new as well as experienced, who were auditioned for the part before bagging it.

"This is a very complex and a layered role. As against a typical portrayal of a victim where she either sobs in a corner or takes a heroic turn, the girl in question had to demonstrate the turmoil she had gone through. All of this had to be done in as realistic manner as possible without making it look filmy at all," informs a source.

Producer Siddhartha M Jain, who had earlier made Ragini MMS, as well as director Sanjay Chhel were very sure that they wanted the leading lady to come up with an ideal mix of vulnerability and aggression.

"Moreover, she needed to be urban and modern while still being a girl next door. She also had to be very comfortable with her body as the film's subject and genre required her to be say it all with not just the spoken words but also her physicality," the source adds, "Since Anjali is a trained actress, she understood the nuances of the character quite well."

Anjali even went ahead to go through a look change for the part and once Siddhartha and Sanjay saw her performance during the auditions; they were convinced that she was right for the part.

"We had to be very careful about how the leading lady played it out on screen in Kill The Rapist?," says Siddhartha, "One skip here or there and the film would have fallen flat. It is a very sensitive subject and it was of paramount importance that the girl roped in was not just a good actor but also an intelligent person."

Sanjay nods in agreement, "For a role like this, you need to have certain mental strength to play it day in and night out. It isn't one of those candy floss entertainers where you come to the sets, wear good clothes, say some nice lines and walk down the sunset. You need to keep a tough mental resolve while playing a rape victim who fights back. Anjali was the one who understood it well and was immediately on board."
