Mallika Prasad, who plays Amma, the first female antagonist in the Mardaani franchise, has emerged as a key talking point following the release of Mardaani 3. The actor recently spoke about the deliberate strategy adopted by Yash Raj Films to keep her character out of pre-release promotions in order to preserve the impact of the on-screen reveal.

According to Prasad, the decision was rooted in the franchise’s long-standing approach to introducing its antagonists. She said, “There's always a lot of joy in the movies whenever there is a big reveal or there is a surprise. The Mardani franchise has excelled at creating great villains, so with the character of Amma this was the plan - to keep things under wraps until the timing was right for the surprise reveal of the first female villain of the franchise.”
The makers reportedly felt that revealing Mallika Prasad’s character ahead of release would dilute the effect of her screen presence. By withholding her from promotional material, the team aimed to retain the element of surprise and allow audiences to encounter Amma directly within the narrative.
Prasad reflected on the audience response following the trailer and the film’s release, saying, “We can see the result with all the amazing fan feedback on the trailer and the tremendous response to the film. All the love and congratulations I've got from fans on my social media for my performance seems to suggest that the character of Amma ‘hits different’ - with creepy supervillain vibes.”
She also highlighted the role of music in shaping the character’s impact. “The score by John Stewart Eduri and the songs by Sarthak Kalyani give the character that extra something - as the character of Amma's ‘evil boss music’ adds to her menace. Indian cinema has some memorable villains, and I've enjoyed essaying this role which speaks to the times - crime and villainy are produced within the system itself, when people are denied justice and exploitation is normalised.”
Mardaani 3, starring Rani Mukerji, is directed by Abhiraj Minawala and produced by Aditya Chopra. The film continues the franchise’s focus on crime and social issues through the lens of a female police officer. The latest instalment has received positive audience response and critical attention, contributing to the franchise’s continued commercial success.
The release also coincides with Rani Mukerji completing 30 years in the film industry, a milestone that has drawn industry-wide acknowledgement. With Mardaani 3, the franchise maintains its position as a rare female-led series in Hindi cinema centred on a law-enforcement protagonist.
