Pankaj Tripathi discusses cinema, aspiring actors and much more in his recent visit to National School of Drama.

Bollywood actor Pankaj Tripathi recently visited the National School of Drama (NSD) and interacted with students at a session of the Bharat Rang Mahotsav. He spoke to them on various topics, including his experience in the industry, the struggles aspiring performers face while trying to make their mark in the industry and much more.

Tripathi claimed that he has frequently noticed that young performers who, after only a few shows, consider themselves as upcoming stars and move to Mumbai. They grow frustrated and begin blaming everyone else for their difficulties when they realise that there is a significant disconnect between their expectations and reality. He also explained that a perfect or best actor does not exist.

E Times quoted Tripathi saying, “Now, when I look back at the work I did ten years ago, when I graduated from the National School of Drama, I feel I was such a bad actor. I know that ten years later I will see my current work and I will think the same. Best actor bol kar kuch nahi hota. Acting ka koi parameter nahi hai, ki ‘yeh perfect actor hai’. It is a life-long learning process. Usain Bolt can be the best runner, but there is nothing called ‘the best’ in acting.”

Tripathi also brought up the point that there is no winning or losing when two performers work together to create a flawless scenario. He said, “Acting is not wrestling, ki within six minutes you can defeat your opponent. Two actors together deliver a perfect scene, and there is no victory or loss,” Pankaj further added, “I came to NSD in 2004, and before coming to NSD, I acted in plays for nine years in Patna. This journey has been of 25-30 years, and I can say that I am still learning. It is absolutely true. Actor ke process mein waqt lagta hai, character ke process mein kam time lagta hai.”

Tripathi also discussed the struggles faced by aspiring performers as well as how drama school students can feel a touch entitled. “In the digital world, everyone is an actor. Everyone is making reels. It is challenging for actors. Audition dene jao, toh pata chala mere mohalle ka chemist bhi aaya hua hai. When actors from drama school stand in those lines, they feel ‘(Why) do I have to stand in this line with these people who are so beneath me?’”

He also discussed the stereotype trap in movies. When he receives proposals today, the script frequently includes a certain gesture he is renowned for, like his famous nod, despite the fact that he has explored a wide range of emotions and movements for his many parts. He said, “Log bolte hain – ‘Payment zyada le lo, lekin wohi karo jo tumne uss mein kiya tha’. Cinema ka apna alag trap hai. Ek baar jo cheez hit ho gayi, wohi karwai jaati hai paise zyada de-de kar. Kain baar karte bhi hain, ki EMI dena hai ya jeevan mein zaroorat ho. Agar aap ye jaan kar role kar rahe hain ki karne ka purpose kya hai, toh theek hai. Purpose pata hona chahiye.”

Pankaj discussed the traps and illusion of fame in movies, when actors begin to think of themselves as gods. He said, “Cinema bahut jaldi dimag kharab karta hai. Shooting pe 200-400 log aa jaate hain, toh actor ko lagta hai ki main bahut powerful hoon. Lekin usko yeh nahi pata ki ek sipahi (policeman) rok kar, aap ko bhej dega bheetar (in jail). Cinema bhram (illusion) create karta hai, aur cinema ka actor uss bhram mein pad ke khud ko ishwar samajhne lagta hai. Phir woh kissi aur track pe nikalne lagte hai, jis se actor ke art ka bhi nuksan hota hai.”

On the professional front, the actor will be next seen in Mirzapur season 3, Main Atal Hoon, and Fukrey 3.
