As Netflix marks 10 years in India, its top executives spell out why local stories, multiple languages and constant reinvention are key to global success.

As Netflix completes a decade of operations in India, the streaming giant’s top leadership has underlined the country’s central role in its global entertainment ambitions. In a recent interview, Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria, and Netflix India’s Vice President of Content Monika Shergill reflected on how the platform has evolved in India—and where it is headed next.

Speaking about accessibility without compromising on brand positioning, Ted Sarandos said, “We have expanded our pricing and product options to make Netflix accessible to more people, without moving away from being premium.” He added that continuous innovation has been key to Netflix’s growth, noting, “We've had to continually innovate and evolve our user experience, recommendations, plans and pricing, payments infrastructure and distribution partnerships across the globe… We embrace change and relish and thrive on competition as it pushes us to improve our service even faster for our members.”

Monika Shergill described Netflix India’s content strategy as offering a “thali” of storytelling. “We make premium soaps and movies and the biggest cinemas stream on Netflix. We will remain the home of the big and bold… We are programming for the broadest audiences,” she said, while also stressing the importance of speed and scale. “We stand for quality and volume. Bringing content to consumers quickly is just as important.”

Reaffirming Netflix’s creative standards, Shergill noted, “We have not left that big cinematic benchmark that Sacred Games or Delhi Crime established. We have added more relatable wide-audience programming, casual entertainment.”

For Bela Bajaria, local storytelling remains at the heart of Netflix’s global vision. “It's very important that you have creators and amazing stories from the world and you allow them this space to tell a very specific, local authentic story,” she said, adding, “If our ambition is to entertain the world, you definitely cannot entertain the world without having incredible local stories from India and in multiple Indian languages.”

Sarandos highlighted that Netflix’s growth is driven by audience engagement. “Our goal is to offer a wide variety of quality series, films and games that our members love,” he said, pointing to global franchises like Stranger Things, Squid Game, and Bridgerton as examples of long-term value creation.

Reflecting on lessons learned in India, Shergill explained how shows like Masaba Masaba, Little Things, Kota Factory, and Mismatched reshaped Netflix’s understanding of Indian viewer preferences. She also dismissed claims that Netflix sidelines new creators, stating, “If we don't have new voices, we are not going to be able to delight or surprise our audiences.”

Looking ahead, Bajaria reaffirmed Netflix’s commitment to India, particularly regional markets. “We are barely scratching the surface… There is still so much room to continue to grow.”

As Netflix enters its next decade in India, its leadership makes one thing clear: India is no longer just a market—it is fundamental to the future of global streaming.
