One of Mumbai’s most iconic single-screen theatres, Bharatmata Cinema, has reopened its doors, marking the return of a heritage movie destination in the city’s Parel area. The cinema resumed operations on March 24 following a comprehensive restoration and upgrade aimed at blending nostalgia with modern viewing technology.
A longstanding cultural landmark, Bharatmata Cinema has served generations of moviegoers and built a strong emotional connection with the local community. Its revival has been led by One Cinemas, in collaboration with Mukta A2 Cinemas, as part of a broader effort to reintroduce the charm of single-screen theatres to contemporary audiences.
The refurbished venue now features Dolby Surround Sound, 2K laser projection, and upgraded seating options including recliners and sofas. A revamped food and beverage experience has also been introduced, enhancing overall comfort while retaining the theatre’s heritage aesthetic and nostalgic identity.
Rajat Haksar of One Cinemas highlighted the significance of the project, saying, “Bharatmata Cinema holds a special place in the hearts of Mumbai audiences, and reviving this heritage cinema is a matter of great pride for us. Our vision is to bring back the culture of single-screen cinemas while upgrading the experience for today’s audiences and keeping cinema-going accessible to everyone.”
Echoing this sentiment, Satwik Lele, COO of Mukta A2 Cinemas, emphasised the long-term vision behind the collaboration. “This partnership between One Cinemas and Mukta A2 Cinemas is built on a long-term vision of growing the cinema business together and expanding quality cinema experiences across markets. Reviving heritage cinemas like Bharatmata is an important step towards preserving cinema culture while building the future of exhibition together,” he said.
The reopening reflects a wider push to preserve legacy cinema spaces while adapting them to evolving audience expectations, positioning Bharatmata Cinema once again as a community-focused entertainment hub in Mumbai.
