Harnaaz Sandhu’s historic win at the Miss Universe 2021 competition continues to inspire aspiring beauty queens across the country. Among them is 19-year-old Kaziah Liz Mejo, who was recently crowned Miss Universe Kerala and has credited the former Miss Universe for motivating her to enter the world of pageantry.
In a recent interaction, Kaziah spoke about the influence Harnaaz had on her personal and professional journey. Recalling her introduction to the pageant world, the young titleholder revealed that it was Harnaaz’s victory for India that first sparked her interest in beauty competitions.
"The first Miss Universe competition I watched was in 2021, when Harnaaz Sandhu won the crown for India after 20 years. I didn’t know much about pageantry then, but seeing India win sparked something in me. What inspires me most about Harnaaz is her resilience. She faced criticism and scrutiny after winning, yet remained true to herself. I struggled with confidence growing up. Watching her embrace who she was encouraged me to do the same," Kaziah said.
Harnaaz Sandhu made history in December 2021 when she brought the Miss Universe crown back to India after two decades. Her win placed her among a select group of Indian women who have achieved the title on the global stage. Since then, she has remained a prominent figure in the pageant circuit while also expanding her presence in the entertainment industry.
For Kaziah, however, it was not just Harnaaz’s victory that stood out. The Miss Universe Kerala winner highlighted the former beauty queen’s ability to navigate public attention and criticism while remaining authentic to herself. According to Kaziah, that aspect of Harnaaz’s journey resonated deeply with her as she dealt with her own confidence issues growing up.
